  • Budvar Dark Lager

Anyone tried this? Only came across it for the first time tonight and thought I'd give it a try. Tasted to me a bit like Super Bock Stout available in Portugal. Was a bit of a weird mixture of Guinness Extra Stout (not draught cans but the good stuff) and, well, the draught Guinness.

All that being said it was a delicious drink with more flavour than many beers on the market these days. Interested on others thoughts.

PS I've still to make my mind up on Guinness Black lager after drinking two 4 packs...

Yes, the Budvar dark lager is fantastic, and a good contrast to the pale/pils styles (originally most lagers would have been dark). If you like Guinness then you should also definately try a schwarzbier (black lager). I'm not sure if this is the style that Guinness have tried to copy with their black lager (nor having tried that - the only Guinness I drink these days is the 7.5% Nigerian brewed export stuff), but the original european black lagers can sometimes be found in supermarkets here now - I've seen bottles of the Czech Herold Bohemian black lager in a few places recently, and that's a great beer.

When I was in Germany I used to love the alt beirs (old beer) that was the traditional style before lager took over - always reminded me of a pale ale (or even newcastle brown ale) taste. Also the dark wheat beers (dunkel-weisse) are fantastic - and available on draft in a lot of bars here now alongside the more normal pale weisse beers.

And you are right, the dark lagers are similar to many of the bock beers, but bocks are normally a lot higher in alcohol.

Anyway, if you can find a good beer shop then there are plenty of pleasures in this area to explore! I'm actually lucky in living in Lancashire these days as the regional supermarket chain Booths has some of the best (and cheapest) bottled beer ranges I've ever seen
