  • Ramon Allones Specially Selected Robusto Corto - RE Paises Bajos 2013

The standard RASS is one of my favourite smokes so I was really looking forward to trying this Dutch RE, even if I think they could have shortened the name slightly! The box was from June 2013 (so was 7 months old when it was smoked) and the box code was BAM

The wrapper had very few veins and was very smooth, it looked really nice and I really have no complaints about it. There was very slight crack at foot but I will forgive that. It was also a very nice colorado colour, which is actually an improvement on standard RASS, which I sometime find a bit dull. The cigar was well packed in the entire length without any obvious knots or loose parts.

The cigar started off with a woody flavour with a slight hint of pepper, I also got some citrus type flavours as first third progresses. For such a young cigar the flavours were really pleasant with no harshness. The cigar started to pick up in second third with a more of a earthy flavour. Roasted nuts eventually started to come through along with another taste I couldn't quite put my finger on (I saw some reviews saying peat, which I don't quite agree with but it is in that area). The nutty flavour really comes through as cigar progresses to final third. Unfortunately the smoke started to get a bit bitter in the final third (again I assume that was due its young age).

This cigar had a great draw during smoke with a little resistance in the draw, which is something I like. I must admit the ring gauge felt a little thick at first, which was surprising as it is 50, which I don't normally have any problem with (maybe I'm out of practice with all this cold weather!). The burn was a little uneven but not to the point where it got frustrating, the cigar just required a few touch ups. The cigars produced masses of smoke, which I think it a very good thing and the ash held brilliantly (I never test this too much as I always tap it off when I think it starts to look precarious, which I know goes against etiquette but I would rather that than it fall on me!).

Considering I was comparing this cigar to the standard RASS it had a lot to live up-to and I am happy to say it managed to live up to those expectations, I thought this was an excellent smoke. It is milder and different cigar to the RASS, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed it so much that I have already warned my wife that she should expect a box to be purchased as soon as I get the chance and the January pay cheque finally comes through!

Nice review! I'm not at the point of buying RE's yet as I am still exploring the standard blends.... Shame because when I get round to it they will most likely be all but gone.

I agree with you on the ash, I hate it when it falls into your lap, which I have had a couple times by pushing my luck. I also find that knocking the ash off can cause a change in flavour that can sometimes be welcome... Not sure why this is, perhaps temperature? Just a guess.

Good review Shepp, but Marc maybe you should do what I do which is to add an RE/LE to every order and collect a few to put away.

Hehe, don't get me started.... I'm a collector at heart and even though I don't particularly agree with collecting cigars with no intention of smoking, if I started on the RE and LE thing I would want one of each that had been available so I could set up a display humi with them laid out in order.

Damn I want to do that now.... Out of interest does anyone here have a collection that encompasses all RE's and LE's? Or gets close to having them all?

Oh I intend to smoke them but not for a long time.

Good review, interesting to hear how different an RE can be. Like VTG I'm still exploring the usual suspects but it does make it seem it'd be worth trying the odd RE/LE once I've futrther developed my tastes. The standard RASS is something I keep meaning to try, just ordered by first box of AF's though and may be picking up those this week's JJfox special so they'll have to wait.

Edit: Guess its colder than I though outside, double pressing keys as I type!
