The standard RASS is one of my favourite smokes so I was really looking forward to trying this Dutch RE, even if I think they could have shortened the name slightly! The box was from June 2013 (so was 7 months old when it was smoked) and the box code was BAM
The wrapper had very few veins and was very smooth, it looked really nice and I really have no complaints about it. There was very slight crack at foot but I will forgive that. It was also a very nice colorado colour, which is actually an improvement on standard RASS, which I sometime find a bit dull. The cigar was well packed in the entire length without any obvious knots or loose parts.
The cigar started off with a woody flavour with a slight hint of pepper, I also got some citrus type flavours as first third progresses. For such a young cigar the flavours were really pleasant with no harshness. The cigar started to pick up in second third with a more of a earthy flavour. Roasted nuts eventually started to come through along with another taste I couldn't quite put my finger on (I saw some reviews saying peat, which I don't quite agree with but it is in that area). The nutty flavour really comes through as cigar progresses to final third. Unfortunately the smoke started to get a bit bitter in the final third (again I assume that was due its young age).
This cigar had a great draw during smoke with a little resistance in the draw, which is something I like. I must admit the ring gauge felt a little thick at first, which was surprising as it is 50, which I don't normally have any problem with (maybe I'm out of practice with all this cold weather!). The burn was a little uneven but not to the point where it got frustrating, the cigar just required a few touch ups. The cigars produced masses of smoke, which I think it a very good thing and the ash held brilliantly (I never test this too much as I always tap it off when I think it starts to look precarious, which I know goes against etiquette but I would rather that than it fall on me!).
Considering I was comparing this cigar to the standard RASS it had a lot to live up-to and I am happy to say it managed to live up to those expectations, I thought this was an excellent smoke. It is milder and different cigar to the RASS, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed it so much that I have already warned my wife that she should expect a box to be purchased as soon as I get the chance and the January pay cheque finally comes through!
