It is such a shame that a rule that makes going out a bit nicer in certain places has to make some things worse.

I think it is a shame when most people who go to private clubs go there for certain things. A gentlemans cigar after dinner should be preserved and I think we are poorer without it.

The same goes for the military, it is just big brother telling us how to live our lives.

Cigarettes are smelly and nasty (unless you have had a few drinks(shame on me)) and should not apply to the wonderful tobacco aroma of a good cigar.

    Rant over

There's a profit to be had...and it sickens me. Bars, shops and cookhouses are all run by private sector now.

As for smoking, the Army (can't comment for the other 2 services) adopted a smoking ban everywhere before the national ban came in to effect. Welcomed by some, despised by most.

The bar in Grantham is particularly bad now they've closed the old bar and stuck the new one in the scoff house at the end. Very bright, not very comfy and zero atmosphere.

No, I just go there for courses at PWOG barracks. A good night out in the town though. Definitely a taxi back to camp. It's easy enough going down the hill on the way to town.
