So my first of my new cuban order was smoked the other day. H Upmann coronas minor.
Unfortunately brought back why I had never got on with Cubans.
Cigar was plugged which was only partially fixed by some serious squashing of the knot under the band to get some draw. Unfortunately was driving and no perfect draw to had to do the best.
Still like sucking on a MacDonalds milkshake.
Initially harsh smoke and a distinct taste of soap. Reminded me of my youth getting caught swearing and having my mouth washed out with that horrid green hard soap.
Not nice.
It sort of calmed down after 15 mins but left a metallic taste in my mouth like I'd been licking aluminium.
Eventually a sort of vegetation taste but retro haling was out as the smoke was quite harsh stripping my nose.
Overall quite a disappointing experience.
However, today I had a package arrive from a member here containing 2 aged Cubans. Had a quick sniff and they smell lovely. Think I'm going to buy the same ones fresh and smoke near enough to compare the difference between fresh and aged of the same cigar. If aged makes a positive difference then looks like I'll have to buy Cubans to lay down for years. In the mean time I've found quite a nice cheap daily cigar in the Joya de Nicaragua classic which although mild was pleasant well constructed and cost effective.
Anyway the journey continues to see if I can find Cubans I adore.

i have to say i have smoked quite a few h upmann coronas minor and major and i have always found them to be very pleasant with a good draw. On the other hand i have had a lot of plugged or tight cc's. If i take a cc out the humi i always grab the perfect draw. never had to use it on a nc. I do favor a nc personally but i haven't smoked many aged cubans so i have an open mind!
Joya de Nicaragua are a brilliant smoke. I really love the rosalones range. They were some of the first cigars i smoked and they are always brilliant and for a very reasonable price. Drew estate produce some excellent smokes and again, never ever had a bad one. Oliva Servie v, o, g. Nub, Flor de copan, My Father, Alex Bradley etc etc....all superb. If it aint broke as they say and the choice is really endless!!
I think the quality of ccs has really improved in the last year or so. Seems every new box i buy has good draw and flavour, whereas some of the stuff from 4 or 5 years back seems more inconsistent. Maybe ive just been lucky.
Sounds like you are rather unlucky with your Havana's Kickback, I have smoked a few Coronas major &minor &I have never had any construction issues, there are run of the mill smokes, nothing exciting but I guess most of us find an ocassional ocassion to smoke one.

Had a Padron 2000 series whilst waiting for my CC to sit in my humidor a while.
Perfect construction and draw, but the taste wasn't for me. Like bitter black coffee. Shame as I hoped it would be similar to their 26 or 64 but a bit cheaper, sadly not.
Got to wait for my next available delivery opportunity for the new cc. (Ie next time Mrs is not at home during the day so I can squirrel them away before she gets back (

I have yet to try anything by Padron, which regular production smoke do you rate? Though i am not a big lover of pepper
Not had many as they're quite expensive but both the 1926 and 1964 natural were good.
Depends how deep your pockets are but the 50 year hammer or the 80 year are supposed to be fabulous.
