sharing a wifi connection

I have just purchased a new laptop and when using it at home on my wifi, it knocks Mrs Nozzle's notebook off line. She is unable to connect to the internet while I am.
I have had a look at the D-link router settings but can't find a way of allowing both to connect to the router at the same time.
Does anyone have any advice please? I've googled my problem but don't have the patience to sift through it all

I assume you are using the router as a DHCP server, so each wireless device is assigned an IP dynamically, per session as it where. There should a a big pool of available addresses. In the router config make sure there is a range of IP addresses available for DHCP use that is bigger than just one. Ensure in the windows setting on the computers they they are requesting a dynamic address.

yep, router should be 192.168.0.1. her pc therefore 192.168.0.2 and your laptop 192.168.0.3 if done manually..DHCP would sort this out automatically and is what most people use.

I would tend to stray away from fixed ip's for laptops and PC's. Printers and likes if on a network yes definatley but nothing else.

All DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) does is assign you an IP for a lease period, generally 24 hours upon which time it is automatically renewed. however it may be that both your laptops may be configured with the same address in which case you will get an ip conflict and the machine with the oldest ip assigned will be removed.

Check in the properties of your network connection, and again in the properties of the Internet protocol entry with in that it is set to automatically assign an ip address.

Pal of mine lives in a small block of flats in Chiswick, despite being a keen 'Torrenter' he has never since he moved in actually paid for his internet connection, he just leeches off neighbours with poor security.
