Mac OS X on PC's

Ah at last a subject that I'm not at noob status at!

I'm a Mac techie (hate the word analyst) and consultant to the publishing sector, in a previous incarnation I was a designer working on Macs.
PLEASE let me or someone redesign the forum headers! I'll do it for free, that font aaaaarrrggghhh. (sorry I'm a font Nazi)

Anyhoo, you can run Mac OS X on virtually any 'modern' PC hardware (I'm typing this on a Compaq Mini 311 running OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard, which also runs Windows 7 and a couple of flavours of Linux)

But make sure the hardware you use has already been used by others to run OS X first, they'll have done all the groundwork on getting all the peripheral hardware and system stuff to work, so that you don't have to.

If you can't find the answer there, look for a forum for the hardware you want to use, they'll have ton's of advice on how to do it.

The customised OS X disk images to do this are "allegedly" freely available on them interwebs, I don't have PM yet (I think) but would be happy to discuss if I'm not breaking forum rules.

Despite what I do for a living I'm not a undiluted MacHead though, I've always said,
If you set up a design company using only PC's you're a ploon.
If you set up a small business doing everyday office tasks using Mac's you're a ploon too.

Macs are great at some things, colour management being the big one in publishing.

PC's are great at being great cheap office workhorses. (and killer Games machines)

It's very easy to mix and match PC's and Mac's in any kind of environment though.

That is interesting and good to know Deano. Of course the PCs I have used were fairly outdated, with the one's at work being packed full of multiple running programs which would obviously slow down the system fairly infrequently. I do remain a Mac man finding them easier, simple, and not to mention beautiful. Entry level macbooks do remain far faster than any entry level PC laptops, which you can actually compare for yourself. Macpros, for me, set the bar for all laptops.

MBP for travel, business and banking as it's so secure. High end PC desktop for gaming... And an iPad for the livingroom/must-look-something-up moment.

Biggest thing about mac for me is ease of use and reliability.

Yeah, I have been playing with it loads over today and yesterday and like Deano's just won't work, at least I know why and have an answer now though, before I was frustrated as to not knowing why. Is there a distro available for an Intel 2 Core Q660 Quad processor?

At first it wouldn't work due to a problem with it not booting from the DVD for some reason. I chose from the HD and it worked (after 2 hours figuring, forum searching and a nights sleep LOL), I got it installed and then booted it up however it had a Kernel Panic when I booted (verbose). I realised it would be to do with the Kernel choice at the installation and saw the boot kernels weren't available for my type of Processor. Soo, I reinstalled and chose different kernels but I realised there weren't any available for mine.

Now I have gone back to XP and and going to be installing Windows 7 later..

Last time with windows 7 my internet wouldn't work due to the driver I had not working, funnily enough it works with vista without need of an ethernet/network driver. I will have to install and see, this time I am going to duel boot them so I can use XP if 7 doesn't work still.

Sounds awfully complicated HH-you considered downloading Ubuntu and giving it a go?

It is at first Dave, but you get used to all the geeky names they give to problems and parts of the installation and so forth and I pick up fast..

I have actually tried Ubuntu and gave up due to my internet not working on it, I did get the OS working though once just obviously can't live without my internet.

Has anyone got any comments on how good Windows 7 is for Graphics and Design work?

I like to do Webdesign and graphics in my spare time and a reason as for going to try Snow leopard is for it being (apparently) better for that.

I have to design using different computers all the time. I mostly use a Mac at home ~ CoreI7 27" imac with 16GB ram and all the trimmings...

I mainly like using a mac because of OSX... but they always cost more. The new range of imac's have really lovely monitor/panels in... so good that i opted to save the money on buying a macPro. There are still several programs that I run in 'paralells' on a mac, rather than dual booting - because there are so many OSX apps taht i find so essential to my workflow.

If using linux, I tend to use either Gentoo, Arch or Ubuntu (by far the easiest distro). Soon we'll all be running android anyway ;D

How long ago did you last try it, and what was the issue with your internet? Chances are it will just work now...

I f****** hate it ! I am running debian on my macbook, it was a gift! I didn't f***** want it/.
Worse thing is I have tried to install mac osx(which is unix!) And I couldn't managed to do it in separeted partition ..all good,went to do back ups and format it all,but guess what!the grub is blown aeway for some reason lol!Now repairing grub! And when I think that only I wanted mac os just becauuse I want to run adobe pproducts properly! Gosh
