    Dear Geek Squad,

I am looking at getting a fan into my large wineador to help maintain an equal temp throughout, at the moment the difference between the top and the bottom is 2?c and 1 Rh, so it's no massive problem, but my anal mind (quiet at the back!) quakes when I see the digital readings...

Anyway, as i am far too dense to solder, or programme, i am wondering if the following set up would be a great 'fan for dummies' option? Seems to work on paper...

So the fan with USB connection:

    USB Ribbon Cable Extension

    USB Plug

    24 Hour Timer

Can you folks see any potential problems, or will this run okay?
Only the impossible is worth the effort.

It will work, but its not really needed.

Thanks Shaun, and for the reassurances ... sometimes I think the wireless sensors cause more harm than good

Just get more hygrometers, and you'll be so dizzy from all the different readings you'll stop worrying.

Also this is the lowest tech geeky solution I can think of. Let us down dude.

I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

I thought I would have made you proud! I managed to find a solution to a problem without having to even look at Pi or programming... Trust me, this is a good thing!

Or from Shaun's viewpoint you managed to find a problem that didn't need a solution

Or i uncovered a problem that was more to do with me, and less to do with my cigar storage ...

Your solution has the following important gaps

                - No record of when the fan switches on/off/duration
                - Periodic humidity and temp readings stored over time
                - No warning if the fan does not switch on at a given time - it might have died
                - No programming (as you said...)
                - The fan is controlled by time rather than necessity (although what necessity has been addressed above...)
                - There are no dashboards in your solution
                - There is a lack of LEDs in your solution
                - It's too simple and it will work first time

Other than that I've no problem with the solution proposed!

Look at buying an oust fan...think they turn on for 5 of for 15...or can make one with an relay and a few computer fans and an old cigar box

                      Down Mexicant Way!

Generally, the simple act of opening and closing the door of a large unit will be sufficient to redistribute the humidity, but that only works if you open the door several times a day, which I suspect most of us on this fine forum do; otherwise, we’d waste our time somewhere else, like MySpace, for instance. (Whew! That’s a long sentence!)

But for the record, don TJ’s massive unit incorporates a blower system like the one you’re considereing: Fans on top of the water containers and several more throughout the unit to keep things evenly distributed as best as possible. FWIW, the distribution fans are on a timer (which is built into the electronic hudification controller).

Now, that’s how we do things down mexicant way!

Do the hygrometers read the same when in the same place? I find 2 in the same Tupperware box can have different readings when they are next to each other even though they have been calibrated the same. I agree it's over thinking it.

I have had 5 hygros in the same bag and its fluke if 3 read the same. And when temp changes are also in the picture ...

                            Stick with one model/brand

Try sticking with the same brand/model of hygrometer for better consistency.

Good advice BB although I do it because I want them all to look the same
