Calling All Geeks!

Muchachos, I recently installed a SSD to replace the primary HDD on my PC, which has several HDDs and two optical drives - all on SATA.

Before installing the SSD, at boot up I would get a message that my 3rd drive was bad and needed replacing.

After installing the SSD, I now get a message that my Primary Slave Drive is bad and needs replacing.

So, in addition to the obvious that I may have a bad drive somewhere, I don't understand why the warning is for the Primary Slave Drive since all my drives are SATA! I thought SATA did away with Master/Slave classifications!

Any thoughts on what's going on?

What make/size/age is your Primary slave drive?

I would suggest juggling the SATA connections around to see if that cures it first, or change the cable.

Thanks for the quick response, senor Davey.

I think all my HDDs are Seagate 1 TB about 2 years old. I have checked all the SATA Cables. No problem there and all the drives work fine.

I don't know which one would be considered the "primary slave" in a SATA system? Is it the HDD that boots up 2nd (after the primary drive)?
Besides, why would S.M.A.R.T identify one of the drives as "slave" since all have individual SATA cables!



One interesting note, one of my optical drives does not show up in the general bios, but it does show up in advanced bios in the boot sequence.

Just found this thread TJ, a long read but they think the problem is the PSU may not have enough juice:

I have a Cooler Master Silent Pro M 850 watts. That should be enough, I would think.

I would think t would be enough, but it isn't about total power output but how much is used on one rail, are all your SATA devices fed off one cable?

If so I would try adding a 2nd cable from your PSU to split the devices across both.

Another simple one would be to unplug SATA devices and then add them one by one back into the configuration, see if it happens only when all are plugged in.

Four of the 5 drives are on the same rail; the 5th drive has it own power cable.

Regarding your suggestion, after unplugging the SATA drives, I assume I would plug them back in one at a time between boots? Won't my system go nuts looking for the other drives?

At the moment I'm looking into the MoBo firmware update and will try your suggestion if an update does not work.
