    Hi there!

As a fellow newbie, I can vouch that this is an excellent forum. Everyone on here is very welcoming and very knowledgeable. I have certainly learnt a lot by browsing the various threads - every day is a school day so they say!

I shall consider myself picked up and I shall eat my slice of humble pie.....

Very embarassing, particularly as I have a degree in English....Oh well, as you quite rightly quote, every day is a school day....

            Different countries, different rules

[QUOTE=TJCoro;131822] Right! If only you had "learnt" how to spell "LEARNED!"

            TJCoro,

I have done a little more digging on this subject, and actually we're both right. In British English, the verb 'to learn' is treated as irregular, and such has the irregular past participle 'learnt'. In American English, the verb is treated as a regular verb, and forms its past tense in the normal way with an 'ed' suffix, i.e. 'learned'. Both conventions are correct, with 'learnt' being the most popular spelling in Great Britain - which is why I spelt (or should that be spelled...) it the way I did. Over the water, the alternative spelling of 'learned' is more common.

            Nick
