    Greetings cigar people,

newbie to the board and despite smoking cigars on and off for 20 years I’m still effectively a newbie to cigars.

I used to smoke for a special occasion and tended to choose cigars on price, buying individually “that’s £25... must be good!”. As I smoked so rarely I didn’t see the need to look for great value propositions or try NCs. I went to Cuba and brought back a few boxes of esplendidos and monticristos but on reflection they were likely fake and I was usually too uneducated/drunk to notice!

then 10 years ago I gave up booze and shortly after stopped smoking cigarettes with one golden rule... I could still have a cigar on “special occasions” (which was pretty much any time I wore a suit), this rule has gradually eased up over the past decade to now, where I smoke 2-4 a month. (I find it incredible that some people smoke that in a day?!). But am already on 3 this week, so the descent begins haha with cigars and coffee taking over from cigarettes and alcohol...

my current regular smokes are Trinidad Reyes and Cuaba Divinos after years dedicated solely to r&j2s but I’ve recently bought a few that I’d never heard of until going on YouTube: Rocky Patel Grand reserve toro, Gurkha heritage robusto and Juan Lopez 2. Not sure I’m ready to buy a box as like having the variety and worried I’d ruin them but would likely be the Trinidads if I did buy in bulk.

I have a few newbie questions but am aware from other forums (fora?) that I have been on over the years (my main passion is watches) that there can often be forum etiquette with newbies so hoping I won’t drive everyone mad by asking a couple now. I could have spread these out to get my post count up but I’m in no rush 😁

As someone who smokes relatively infrequently I still tend to buy individual sticks, occasionally pairs, and currently have 15 in a tuppadore while I calibrate my new Boveda butler and move them back to my cheap wood humidor. So, are the cheap £25 humidors you can get good enough for keeping individual sticks like I do, for a month or so? Or should I get something better. My plan was to use a big tuppador if/once I start getting boxes to age and keep the cheap wood one for my single odds and ends.

second question- I live in London and the temperature currently drops quite a bit at night (to 60/62) when the heating is off but goes up to 70 in the day- is that too much of a change? Worried the fluctuations will be a problem but not sure what else to do!

Many thanks for letting me on the forum and hope you’ve stayed awake to the end of my long intro!

Looks like you've got a nice bit of background experience there, welcome!

Hard to tell without seeing your humidor; I imagine it's probably ok if it's cedar lined especially considering your short storage times. Go big on your next humidor

Temp fluctuation is meant to be bad, consistency would ensure a better level of protection in storage.

        Welcome aboard.

If you haven't got one already, get a couple of digital thermometer/hygrometers from Amazon (two so you can compare them for efficacy before you use them), and see what the fluctuations are within the humidor. Needless to say, how well it seals is vital too.

welcome. question is how do you know the fluctuations are going on? are you opening the box a load.... or is it from a simple hair hygrometer.

if you are opening the box lots.... stop. as Deano put it; stability is key. slow changes are fine... and your shifts arent huge.

tupperdores are just fine.. simple reliable and easy to change up if you get more stuff. smaller humi's can tend to hold humidity a little less well than larger bodies of air/ tobacco.

              enjoy!

Another advantage of a 'Tupperdore' (Lock n Lock) is that you can see the digital thermometer/hygrometer without opening the lid.

Welcome aboard, sounds like you have to much experience to be considered a newbie and rest assured the guys in here are a great bunch so ask away with all the questions you have.

Trini Reyes are great smokes (as are most of the Trinidad range) so you’re clearly a man of taste

personally I won’t worry too much about an 8-10 degree swing in temperature especially considering you are not holding cigars long term. Just keep conditions consistent as best you can, keep them in a place that avoids direct sunlight, radiators and draughts etc. However I’ve not done any testing so maybe someone will correct me and say this will badly effect burn or something.
