Eager newbie

So I’ve decided to ditch the fags and take up cigars instead as I figure it’s a much more civilised way to enjoy smoking tobacco!

I’ve tried a couple of great cigars so far, Monte No. 4 & a Petit Edmundo (which was incredible). Got a Monte No. 3 ready to go and a few others on the way - Nub Maduro 460, Alec Bradley Orchant Seleccion Chubby, Alec Bradley Black Market Toro & an Asylum 13 Robusto.

I’m just getting to grips with this but I’m finding I prefer a fuller smoke, possibly due to years of smoking full strength fags? I’m enjoying a larger ring gauge but equally keen to try a lengthier stick with a smaller ring gauge - any recommendations for a good daily smoke of any size or strength would be appreciated?

I’d be keen to know your thoughts on storage, currently using a large Boveda bag but that’s not a permanent fixture ... eyeing up a large travel humidor that could work for home & travel but not sure if these are designed for long term storage?

Just bought a triple jet lighter as I learned the hard way that lighting a stick with a decent ring guage with a clipper in the wind soon burns your thumb (nice wheel marks to show for it on my thumb print lol). Got a decent double guillotine cutter from Cgars which is ace ... now eyeing up some nice ashtrays as I don’t think the one I use(d) for fags is befitting of a decent cigar!

welcome aboard... looks like an interesting selection to have started with. Petit Robusto and Robusto are great sizes to start with; not too fat not too thin and easy to enjoy.

Thanks, it’s been hard to pick with nothing personal to reference from initially so I could be making some questionable choices based on tasting notes and average ratings - time will tell! The guys at Cgars suggested the Monte’s and they’ve definitely been a cracking place to start, hope the others will live up to them!

Welcome onboard Yorkie, I expect Monte's we many of our first Havana's. They used to be available in hotels, bars & restaurants so perfect situation to try one after a meal/celebration. Of course all ancient history now but worth remembering. If you are looking for something a little bigger the Monte No2 is a true classic Havana & although not quite as good a they used to be, they are still a very fine smoke indeed.

Hi and welcome!
This is THE font for knowledge and ideas, so enjoy getting stuck in.

Cutting torpedos really depends on the smoker to be fair- if I were you, I’d start with a 5mm+ cut- see how it smokes and how you feel with it.
From there I’d cut higher- depends too on the sticks make up- if it’s tight you may find a larger cut is required.

Maybe the following aren’t daily smokes, but If you like a stronger/flavoursome smokes you can’t do much better than a Bolivar Royal Corona - a stunner in my opinion. Or perhaps a Partagas D4 or stretch even to the fabulous E2 - now these can be awesome if you get a good aged example. Not exactly quick smokes, but then again you never want to rush a good cigar.

If you like them a bit fuller and stronger then I'd look at the NCs, Fuente Opus X and Anejo, Plasencia Alma Fuerte, Andalusian Bull, and Drew Estate Liga 9 and T52. But a good idea to start with some milder CCs first as the guys say, buy the above now and let them rest for a month or two in the mean time.

Thank you, I’d been eyeing up the Partagas D4 it sounds like a really nice smoke ... another one to add to the next order! It must be so easy to get carried away, I’m like a kid in a sweet shop, I could spend a fortune 🙈

You can also cut a torpedo on slightly slanted. Which opens up the cigar up a little a bit like this ...which I had the other day.


Storage wise...most will recommend get the biggest you can afford. A really cost effect one is a lock and lock box with a boveda pack doe a great job...then you can look for a more long term storage option.
