  • Newbie from New York moving to Cambridge

Hi! I'm a New Yorker moving to Cambridge in three short weeks to start my Masters in theoretical physics. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good place to buy and/or smoke cigars in town (preferably near campus). Back at my undergrad there was an amazing cigar lounge and bar two blocks from my dorm (the Owl Shop in New Haven, if anyone's been!) and I'd love to find something like that. Barring that, I'd be curious to know where to pick up stogies in person or online.

I'm also wondering what the cigar market is like in the UK. I like to pick up my cigars online from a US site with great prices, great customer service, and I'm wondering if there's anything similar across the pond. I looked at one site which got recommended here, C. Gars, and it looks like they're significantly more expensive than American retailers, for example this:

average 13.5 pounds for a Rocky Patel! Which is way more than I'd pay to just have them shipped from the States, of course. I usually prefer to smoke non-Cubans, they're cheaper, just as good (if not better) quality, more consistent, and there's a ton more variety. Are there any good UK-based sites where I can pick up the best Nicaraguan, Dominican, etc. brands for comparable prices to US sites? e.g. Man o War, 5 Vegas, Oliva, and the like?

Would appreciate some help - some good sticks will definitely help me get through the slog of academia! Can't wait to move out to the UK and anyone in the Cambridge area should let me know if they want to meet up for a herf.

From York, Pa Welcome. My Family in the early 60s had a Caravel Ice Cream shop in New haven Connecticut down the street from Yale.. Also remove the NC retailers web addy as not to piss off the forum police here.

Welcome from another american ex-pat. As for your cigar prices - cgarsltd is pretty much your best choice. You, my friend, have moved to the land of high taxes. The majority of the price difference is tax. In general NCs are hard to find hereabouts, and when you do find them they are usually as expensive or more expensive than a CC. Really no one complains too much as we have easy access to CCs.

My Advice is to keep your family sweet so they send you regular gifts of your favorite smokes, but also to support your local B&M. Magic things start to happen when you have a good relationship with your local stockist!

            Hello and Welcome,

As a lover of NC's (Mmmmm Nubs) I share your pain re UK NC pricing, but a couple of points of caution.

Discussing purchasing from non-UK sources is not allowed on this forum.
            Could result in a ban!

Cgars rock, their customer service is second to none, and they will price match any legit UK source.

            Again welcome to the UKCF

                      Welcome!

How many songs can you name after NY? 10? 15? I can't name a single one about Cambridge. Really makes you think

And to add to the above, tobacco costs moneyin taxation. It sucks, but hey, we get free universal healthcare to fix our throat cancer
I'm still waiting for the whiskey to whisk me away
And I'm still waiting for the ashtray to lead me astray
