I think the HUHC is a bit more forgiving than the Demi Tasse, being a bigger RG makes it easier to keep cool. I also think the HUHC is a better choice if smoking young, the Demi Tasse can have rough edges in my experience. They do however age beautifully, if you could ever try one with 10+ years you will be hugely rewarded. I have 3 boxes of Demi Tasse I think, I?m hoping some last far into the future, my boxes of HUHC likely won?t last that long.
I am surprised anyone finds the ERDM DT harsh, rather than just too young I would think the most likely cause of smoking them too fast, allowing them to burn too hot. Just read of a a guy on a FB page who claims to make them last an hour! Frankly I don't know how he keeps them lit that long but I manage 40-45mins. If they are lasting 20-30mins, because you chose it as a quick smoke in your busy day - you're getting it all wrong. It's a small cigar but not to be rushed, if you want to get the max out of them; just imagine you'd bought it at a London B&M at ?7 or so, sure you'd try & slow it down then!
Ageing is important with all ERDM's IMHO, it's not essential but they improve so much, it's like drinking a decent claret at 2yo or 8-10. I am currently smoking a box of 2001 (for red letter days) & 2011, my 2013 & 2 boxes of 2015 are ageing in the depths of the Boli Cave & won't see the light of day for another couple of yrs.

Quite right Simon, I wouldn’t call them harsh but they arn’t as approachable young as HUHC, not that it’s a bad thing I just think the HUHC is particular good young perhaps the best Cuban to smoke “too young”. Burning them too hot is the most probably as I mentioned a larger RG makes cigars easier to keep cool especially important for someone just getting into the hobby. I think 45 minutes is about right for me, I’ve just checked my notes but I don’t have any on DT with timings.

Max, I'd say the wine analogy is as good as any, if you have had a 10-20yo claret & compare that to a 2yo in a restaurant or supermarket, you'll notice how harsh the tannins are (admittedly wines have been 'improved over the last 20yo' so they don't take as long to mature but there is still a marked difference.
Now not everyone appreciated fine wine, my wife cannot tell the difference & that's why I gave up laying down wine, tying up a lot of cash for little reward. So for those who really enjoy cigars straight from the shop then enjoy! But remember these days, the cigars you buy will only be 3-6months old, as they are exported as fast as Habanos can shift them. Historically they would be kept in Cuba for several yrs. & then H&F would keep them too so you could buy 4-5yo cigars in the shop & they were indeed ready to smoke & most CA's of the day wouldn't have bothered with big hum?s, they filled 50+ counts with a box or two & just bought more when they go low. No problem with Ammonia, harshness, strong nicotine. The purpose of aging wine is to moderate the tannins so the wine is more balance but still has than backbone that the remaining tannins provide. If a cigar is kept too long, like wine is will pass it 's peak & gradually fade away. Unfortunately, one man's taste is different to another so there is nothing more than guidelines when you might enjoy them best. If you use the search you?ll find several threads over the last few yrs. on this subject in some detail.
I'll just say I prefer most Havana's with at least 3yrs & 5-10yrs is the median for me. I also have some 20-40yr cigars that are still amazing & have smoked some that have been well past their best. The other thing vintage wine & cigars have in common is their price! So best lay a few singles aside & later a box or two & one day you'll suddenly find you have a nice selection for those red letter days without having to break the bank at your local B&M.

Terribly - I keep smoking them! I buy cigars, smoke em, buy more. I am poor currently so really can't afford this habit at all, let alone a collection. Hi ho [emoji23]
