• Non smoker to occasional!??

Hi folks

Long time lurker on the forum but didn't register and post till last week, asking about purchasing aged cigars.
grumpybaldy suggested introducing myself so here I am. He also did say my aim of smoking just 4 a year was not realistic!!!!!! (Subconsciously do agree) Sensible me says can be done!
K444HEP and simwells were quite helpful on giving me advice as well; good to see a fellow Scot there.

Smoked my first cigar a few weeks ago, H Upmann junior. Not the best rated but decided to go with the tobacconist's recommendation. Absolutely enjoyed it....this is coming from a non smoker (only time I tried a cigarette was in school when you're trying to smoke secretly in the toilet with friends, with a can of air freshener and the window wide open! Hated that so never went back)

First aim is to get enough of an understanding and experience to ask a friend of mine visiting Cuba in October for some good purchases!! (Any recommendations please do let me know)

Also focusing on CCs only

Ciao

Also if anyone has any recommendations on humidors please do let me know.....from what I've read the locknlock method is best for me now?

If you're only going to smoke four a year you might as well just buy them as you go along.

why not aim for once a month, and dont discount nc's there are some absolute gems as there are some dog rocket cc's (ill get my coat!)

any tupaware with a good seal will do the job with a boveda in.

keep an open mind and enjoy the learning curve!

Welcome,

Many of us didn't smoke before starting cigars, it's probably a lot more common than you are thinking. Should also say in case you ever meet me, I'm not actually Scottish just moved up here a few years back.

Why the aim for four smokes a year out of interest?

I would just get a large locknlock type tupperware container and a boveda to store them in if you are talking only small numbers

Neither am I, moved here 7 years ago.....but home now

4 a year is more cause of the ball and chain....the usual health concerns. Cycle a bit and definitely felt out of breath when I cycled a few days after smoking....not to mention I couldn't taste anything for a few days..that was very concerning...I do like my food.

Good to know that I'm not the only one in terms of starting this journey as a non smoker

Welcome!

A lock n lock is a great start.

It's tough to recommend something as this depends on your palette. Go with what you've tasted and liked so far.

If you are going to be smoking 4 a year (ha!) a box will last you 6 years! So you'll be nicely testing the aging process of your choices.

Welcome!

I picked up cigars properly about 3 years ago, i'd dabbled with the odd cigar here and there just buying what ever was recommended by the shop I was in as well as my final summer of uni smoking Villiger Exports and drinking cider.

aside from that i'd never smoked in my life so started with no knowledge about anything - luckily and unluckily I live down the road from A La Casa Del Habano and that's were it all really started with Cubans. I find I need to be in the right mood to smoke a cigar, to me it's a relaxing thing and i need the time to be able to do it. I used to be a one or two a week person but life has got in the way of that a bit in the last year and aside from a holiday last year i've probably only had 10-12 sticks in the last 12 months.
But that's fine with me, personally i've never had an aim in terms of numbers to hit a month/year etc but more just when i'm feeling right and have the time i'll look through the humidor and pick something out.

As much as smoking cigars is the main part of the hobby, I love collecting cigars and visiting different shops ad places to get them, then there is the lighters and cutters - much like watches (also a love for me) you can only really use one at a time but doesn't stop you from having handfuls of them to choose from come the time to wear/use one!

Enjoy the forum, it's a great place with friendly people and a wealth of information and knowledge

final thing, if your thinking about getting a humidor, always get the next size up....

Our advertising sponsor has a deal whereby they send you a few cigars every month in a humidity bag with a Boveda pack that is good for 30 days. If you have done your reading on here you'll know the packs can be recycled successfully.

Welcome along to the forum. I would second the advice given by PeeJay as given the numbers you aim to smoke - a subscription model gives you a range of different cigars to try each month and a convenient short term storage solution.
