  • Bonjour/Hola/Konnichiwa/Caide mar ata tu?

    Gabriel here,

Thought I would write a few lines in the newbie section. This forum I have found to be very informative with a relaxed atmosphere to boot. The area where I reside at present is not exactly awash with cigar smokers ie along the border which separates Northern Ireland and The Irish Republic. Graduated recently from the University of Ulster in Coleraine with a BA (Hons) degree in French/Japanese and European Studies. I have to admit that I am more of a linguist by design than personal choice. Moreover my degree was an unmitigated disaster from day one. Yet won't bore you with a tale of woe. These days,I am searching the good ship Employment only to find that sinking feeling as rejection letters come flooding in continiously. Biding my time then doing a spot of language tuition, mainly French and one or two Irish students. Methinks I need to take flight and head for pastures new but Procrastination is one of my additional middle names.

Hobbywise I have just finished some golf lessons only yesterday. Next step is to take to the course weather permitting. I play badminton though roughly 2/3 times a week. I like also creative things like art, writing, photography etc as well as having an eclectic mix of musical taste.

On the cigar front it was good to see the posting that Monte put up and the recommendations from people who have bought from him. I have been getting my cigars up to this point from a retailer in Lisburn. I have shied away thusfar from buying say a box of 25 of one particular cigar. I tend to purchase sampler sets of cigars and do a Boots ie Mix n Match. The ones I prefer would probably be Bolivar/Montecristo/Punch in the Havana bracket followed by the non Cubans namely Charatan and Balmoral. The shop owner Tony is going to get me some Trinidad/Cohiba/Ramon Allones/Vegas Robaina over the next few weeks.

Think that will do for now.

    Gabriel

              Welcome mate.

Don't lose heart about the employment...my younger daughter is 23 and graduated last year from Glasgow Uni...she's still looking but starting to get more responses now than when she first left. It just takes time...but you'll get there.

              Best,

              Wildwood

                Hi Gabriel

We've chatted a bit behind the bikesheds, but I'll say hello properly here now.

Just been going over the graduate employment lack thing with my lad who is in his final year at Kingston Uni. Things look dodgy this side of the degree, and clearly after yours.

I empathise, mate. My degree is in French and Linguistics. In that moist sack of lingo activity, I continued my German. I wanted to be a teacher from the age of 14 and went straight in after Uni with PGCE and have been in that broad trough more or less happily from the word go.

We've connected over teaching, and I would say do it if you think you'd like it, but for God's sake DON'T do it if you are looking for something to do and you need some wad.

Work in a bar rather than enter teaching reluctantly. It kills many people, does teaching.

I get brassed off with it and look for other things to do. I did that first when I was in my early 20s and was interviewed to work for Proctor and Gamble in soap box design for three times the salary.

                Soap box design ffs!!!
                It's really not for me!

When I look now, I'm nearly 50. Less attractive. Too expensive.

Dover Docks is ten minutes from my front door by car and translator jobs - communicating in accurate French and German - are advertised... for ?15k. lol!!! So I stay put.

And I put my energy into loving my family, and playing music and enjoying my life.

For you, I would have thought you have far more attractive strings to your bow with Japanese and a good Uni like yours in the background.

You've got great taste in cigars there. I wish you lived next door. I'd be cadging!

So hello, emeraldisle Gabriel, and type for Britain.

                Bryan

I'd be up those drainpipes in through the Velux before you could scream cheveta. In the rubber swimwear, and all.
