  • Hi From North Herts.

A complete newb to cigars and actually smoked my first yesterday. I tried a Trinidad Reyes.

Living pretty close to Cambridge I took a couple of hours off yesterday and popped into Robert Graham store to get some advice and with the plan of smoking my first cigar. I kind of hoped we could have a chat about various cigars for the beginner but unfortunately the guy, as nice as he was, didn't seem up for it. Anyway he chose a Trinidad for me when I said it would be my first, cut of the end and I took it downstairs to the lounge area to have a go.

I was left to my own devices to light it, which I think I messed up slightly as the first 15 mins had an odd shaped burn. By that I mean it wasn't parallel, caused by me catching part of the body with the lighter I think. I was told it would take 20 minutes to smoke, which for ?11.99 didn't seem long but fortunately it lasted me a lot longer. Talking about cost of cigars, I just checked and they sell it online at ?10.49. Is it normal to pay more in store?

I was hoping to have a drink with my cigar but apparently they cannot sell alcohol and a coffee was not available. I'm sure the experience would have been much better with a drink of some sort.

I did enjoy it and look forward to smoking a second and hopefully relaxing more with it. After doing a little reading I am considering buying a H.Upmann Coronas Junior next and trying that as it's not too big. A decent choice?

Any recommendations on a good chewing gum to help combat the long lingering tobacco taste afterwards.

Look forward to getting a little more involved in the future.

Welcome to UKCF, Dylan! The Reyes is an unusual (albeit excellent) first cigar, it seems you enjoyed it.

Along the lines of short smokes, I'd recommend the Upmann Half Corona, the Partagas Shorts and perhaps the RyJ Mille Fleur, which isn't particularly flavourful but it is quite mild, and cheap.

Welcome to the forum Dylan, shame you're first experience wasn't so good. Had there been another smoker in the lounge I'm sure they would have kept you right.

Online prices are generally a little cheaper than instore in most places.

Well I popped in to a shop in my local town that I know sells tobacco to see if they sell cigars. They have a small range and I bought myself a H.Upmann Corona Junior for my second cigar. It seems this is a decent choice for a beginner if what I have read is correct!

Looking forward to Saturday afternoon when I plan to have a bit of time to myself and enjoy it. And this time I will have a drink with it

Welcome along Dylan. Reyes got me in to cigars too. Forget the gum & savour the flavour.

Welcome Dylan. Enjoy your new hobby. Check out the 'What are you smoking today' thread for inspiration on what to buy next. You're definitely heading in the right direction with H Upmann [emoji1360]

Welcome Dylan - hope you enjoy the journey!

As far as shorter (and more reasonably priced) smokes go I'd second a few of the recommendations already made:
                              • H Upmann Half Corona
                              • Montecristo No. 4
                              • Flor De Cano Selectos
