  • Humidor newbie!

Hi guys! First post and in need of some sound, honest advice.
So, I've been a casual cigar smoker for a number of years now, no particular favorites although I am fond of a Montecristo No 4.
I have never had to store cigars as i always just tend to buy the odd few sticks at a time and consume them before replacing.
Anyway, I've just got back from Cuba and you can probably guess whats coming next. ;-)
Lets just say i got a little carried away!

I came back with a 25 box of No 4's, 10 Madura 5 Magicos plus some Siglio II's, the odd single plus a bunch of hand rolled cigars from a tobacco farm. Oops!

I've popped the farm cigars into a tupperware box by themselves and into the deep freeze for a few days to kill any nasty's that may have hitched a ride back with me.
BTW, they are made from the same leaves as Cohiba, the farmer fermented using his own recipe, there actually really good! A little harsher but full of flavor.

So i have this nice selection now and no where to store them. Ive popped them all into a large tupperware container for now and have a Xikar digi Hygrometer and Xikar crystal humidifier on its way. Not sure if that was a good move or not as i was kind of buying blind.

What i would love from you guys is advice on a good looking but functional humidor that wont break the bank to help me display and preserve my new collection/investment!

Any help or advice on a humidor or anything I've said above that maybe wrong please chime in.

    Thanks Guys.
    Dave

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum, sounds like you had a great trip. Ebay is always a good start and there is a German site called Humidoro that does some nice humidors too. Best stay out of the shops unless you have lots of money.

The best advice I can give you is to buy one that is bigger than your needs , because without a doubt one to suit your needs now will be overflowing in a years time

Sorry I can't link, but I just bought one on Amazon, holds 100 cigars has a glass top and sides, was 75 quid plus delivery. I haven't actually seen it yet but our lass said it looks very smart. It was shipped from Germany, I think the seller was something like HUMIDORO.
Was by far the best value one I could find.

          Welcome bud.
Check out this previous thread, photos in there too:

I highly recommend a 100ct box from here:
Buy Humidors for Cigars from Watch Winder .co.uk : a leading UK supplier of cases, display and storage boxes

          Particularly this:

BARGAIN price, I have one, but the solid top version, top top quality.
You will not find better quality for this price?
And it's not cheap & cheerful, it's cheap with an excellent build quality!

          All the very best!

              Hi mate, welcome!

Assuming you've left the cigars in their boxes and put them inside the tupperware container, you've already well on your way to creating somewhere to store your cigars. A lot of us use tupperware boxes for the job! Just pop your hygro and crystals inside the box and you're set! The cedar wood that cigar boxes are made from helps to regulate humidity.

No need to lay out for a humidor, especially if you've just splashed out on sticks!

              Here's mine:

I have small desktop humidor. It says it can hold 50 but more like 25 practically. I take enough out of the boxes to last a week or two and keep them in the desktop and store the rest in a scuba box. They can be got at B&Q for 20 quid. They are hermetically sealed and therefore ideal for storing cigars.

Wow, thanks for all of the advice guys! Storage is alien to me! Will use my tupperware box for now and take my time over the humidor. I do want something nice to display and store my stick in though!
Will let you know how i go!

Hello, Welcome along. I would give the freezer treatment to the rest of your cuba haul along with the farm rolls. Cuba is notorious for fakes though. If its your first box purchases you might not have noticed. There is a lot sold outside the offical LCDH shops and these are all most certainly fake. Which in a good case are like your farm rolls. In a bad case are filled using floor sweepings and lead paint.

                      Knewbee on board!

                      What? No intro post?
I can either move this thread to the "knewbee greets" forum or you can post one up over there yourself. Your choice....and oh yeah - welcome to the show.

Welcome to the forum Dave. Can't really add much more, you've already been given good advice from the long timers, I have a small travel humidor for some, and a glass jar as overflow if needed. Boveda packs are a God send, you may want to look into getting some of those!

                        Welcome,

That's a super sweet setup! I actually bought some empty boxes for my tupperdor.

No, my haul is legit. Saw many fakes out and about, only made my purchases in the licensed places. They where checked on leaving Havana at the airport, was pulled aside at security as they where in my carry on. Saw a few guys have theirs taken off them!!
