  • Introduction...

    Hi,

Totally new to this forum, joined though through a recommendation from Simon Bolivar who I know from a FB group. Been smoking around 5 years but have only really started collecting over the last 6 months or so. With that out the way, I thought I'd see what popular opinion was on my next purchase. I've got an opportunity to buy either 2 boxes of RA Grandes, Spanish regional from 08, or a box of regular production RA Gigantes. Essentially the same cigar or so I've heard. I've found a few reviews though that point to the Gigantes actually being a better smoke even though the Grandes are already aged. Thoughts?

There would only be a few members that could help you with that one, Simon being one of them. Butterz will probably give you an opinion but no one listens to him.

Welcome aboard. Unfortunately I've not tried the RA Grandes, so cannot offer an informed opinion. I'm sure someone will have some first-hand experience to pass on, however.

Hi Mike, both are great smokes but the Gigantes wins for me. The Gigantes is a huge double-corona and the Spanish Grandes is a Churchill IIRC. The Grandes is quite a bit lighter than a RASS and didn't have the usual power you'd expect from a RA.

Cheers for the input guys. Ah, if only all cigars came in boxes of 10 as well as 25s etc.

The Gigantes has a very medium full profile with a good ass kicking nearing the end. Something for the summer, definitely. The DC is really enjoyable when you want the whole RA regular profile and experience similar to halfway through a RASS. Something that really puts me off the Gigantes and the Hoyo DC. Rather just smoke two cigars than those ones...

The Grandes is my preferred one due to the amazing mildness. Milk chocolate on the nose. Milk chocolate on the taste. Brilliant. Nothing like what the RA regular productions have to offer - at all.

Both are superb - just depends on whether you like strong cigars or not. But in the end, another piece of logic to help you decide is that the Gigantes will probably be around for a while with no end in sight. The Grandes, albeit 120000 cigars made, will be gone much sooner than the Gigantes. But not too much sooner because regions everywhere (Canada, Germany, AP, and the UK that i know of) have the Grandes on their shelves.

Good show on the Grandes. Would've been my choice.

Put up a review one day if you can. Got me excited to crack my box open... Hard to part with the 3-4-3 perfect arrangement!

Firstly Apologies Mike, missed this thread until now & welcome onboard! When you introduce someone to our club, you often wonder which new member they might be; hiding behind exotic handles as we do but yours is even straight fwd than mine!
                    So on to your question:

'The Grandes is my preferred one due to the amazing mildness. Milk chocolate on the nose. Milk chocolate on the taste. Brilliant. Nothing like what the RA regular productions have to offer - at all.' Jezza

This is one sentence from Jezza I can agree with.
I'd have probalby gone with the Grandes, on the basis I thought they were great & I have a few RAG's in the bottom of my humi which I haven't got around to smoking, as I rarely seem to have the time & weather to smoke DC's these days. However, even you obviously made the right choice - a box of each. And already your stashing them away before the wife sees them. Before you know it you'll be having deliveries sent to the company address so you can bring them home in your offshore grip!
Now as Jezza suggested, please do a review of both & let us know your preference. And in my best Blue Peter tones, 'Here's some I prepared earlier...'RA.Gigantes.2007-08-18a_0206.jpgRA.Gigantes.2007-08-18b_0207.jpgRA.RE.Spain.2011.09.28_3151.jpgRA.RE.Spain.2011.09.28_3152.jpg
