  • Hello from Wales, and London (mainly London ...!)

Well, that didn?t go as well as I hoped ?

Told my wife I fancied taking up cigars and she isn?t exactly enthusiastic (an understatement). So, I?m here ?undercover?. I live in South Wales, but work away in London a lot so I guess I will be looking for nice places to hang out for a pleasant smoke. And working out how I can make my clothes smell fragrant again overnight in a hotel room before catching the train back home!

    Anyway ?

    Hello all,

I?ve always loved the smell of cigars ? cheap ones, expensive ones, doesn?t matter ? and occasionally smoked before I met my wife. For lots of reasons, it was forgotten about, but everything kicked off recently when in London and I ended up walking along Oxford Street behind someone who was smoking a good cigar. The smell was heavenly and I walked right past where I was going just to hang on to that wonderful aroma.

Then, as if fate were trying to tell me something, I found my old humidor in the attic. Of course, I knew it was there all along, but it had just been forgotten. Inside? About 15 Montecristo No.4s, 5 Bolivar Coronas and 5 rather intimidating large Sancho Panzas (?), all of which I faintly recall purchasing about 12 years ago! I managed to sneak out on a couple of evenings after my wife went to bed for a Monte and a Bolivar, but, to be honest, it?s not much fun trying to smoke as quickly as possible, then eat an entire pack of extra strong mints, then think of an excuse for why I?m sleeping in the spare room, and all the time hoping the smell has gone by morning and my young daughter doesn?t call for me during the night. Goes without saying, after a long break and a little anticipation, both were still immensely enjoyable cigars and seemed to have survived their stay in the attic reasonably well. (Mind you, perhaps a well-kept cigar might convince me otherwise.)

Naturally, that?s why I told my wife, so I wouldn?t have to sneak around behind her back. Unfortunately, her reaction suggests it probably isn?t going to be something I do to wind down at home, but I think (hope?) it?s a ?don?t ask, don?t tell? position when I?m away. Just so long as I don?t rub her nose in it by coming home smelling bad (!) or leaving recent purchases lying around. To be fair, I could be doing a lot worse when away from home than enjoying a few cigars!
Sorry that?s quite a long introduction, but looking forward to getting to know you, learning a lot, following up on recommendations (and perhaps one day feeling confident enough to make a few) and, since I?m usually on my tod in London, maybe even meeting up for some conversation over a cigar or two.

I?m also new to online forums of any description, so bear with me if I screw up on protocol! Got to figure out how this all works!

    All the best.

Welcome onboard Undercover. I always shower & wash my hair after having a cigar before going to bed. My wife says she can still smell it, which she doesn't like but I have never retired to the spare room! Smoking in London when your away sounds less hassle but you'll have to search hard for hotels that let you smoke in the room these days.

Hi and welcome, London has lots of cigar merchants with sampling rooms and hotels with cigar terraces, you should be spoilt for choice. Smoking outside should keep your clothes smoke free

Welcome Undercover. I'm in Basingstoke, but travel into London occasionally to work and a cigar in JJ Fox, St James.

Hiya buddy, I'm near Croydon which is just a short hop on the train from you. Don't see why we can't hook up for a relaxing smoke in the garden if the rain ever fucking stops! rain.jpeg

Welcome, perhaps you could rent a cigar storage lockup at one of the London retailers? Oh and I always find honesty is the best policy in relationship, everything comes out in the end anyway..., But your a big boy so do what you want.

Ahh, Croydon. Know it well ... kind of. My wife and I lived together in Hackbridge for a while before moving to Brixton. Living in Wales, I know what rain is like!

OK, just figuring this forum stuff out ... so a reply to someone's comment is actually another comment on the thread ... Yep, 44 going on 84

Thanks for the warm welcome. I live about 8 miles north of Newport. My wife's from Wales, but ironically she'd move back to London tomorrow and I'm pretty settled. One daughter, two cats, and feeling old and wise enough to go out and enjoy some of the finer things in life.

Honesty is most definitely the best policy, which is why I talked to my wife about my wanting to enjoy cigars and the delicate equilibrium is 'do what you like, but I don't want to know about it in any way, shape or form'. I think that pretty much rules out a relaxing smoke on balmy summer evenings in the garden, but since I spend a good part of the year working in London, I reckon I can enjoy it enough when I'm away.

So, let's say I want to ask for recommendations on cigar-friendly pubs in London, or more details on PeeJay's gazebo, do I start another thread?
