  • Hello from North London...

    Hi all,

I'm Dan, I'm 26 and live in Sunny Norf London. I actually made it my new years resolution to get into cigars, mainly inspired by my late Dad who used to enjoy the occasional smoke! I am also trying to ween myself onto spirits to go with them....The resolution was to be more decadent in life!

Very early days, only really smoke about 5 or 6 of what I think are fairly straight forward cigars. Just few different Cohiba's (only siglo's) and a couple of Romeo and Juliette's!

I will open my account with a question I couldn't find the answer to... My Dad had a cigar box which I am using, but I am not sure if it was/is suitable as a humidor. It doesn't have any humidifying things in it currently but looking around I might be able to buy some bits and make it a humidor?

    This is it:

Also, the R&J's in there I think are really old, they are pretty hard... Can these be revived or is it better to just bin them!

So thanks in advance for any help, I am planning on buying a selection of new Cigars in the next week or so, got about ?100-?150 to spend...any must tries?

    Cheers
    Dan

Hi dan welcome to the forums! I'm sure you will enjoy the discussions that go on and you've made a good choice to make it your resolution!

As for the cigar box it doesn't look like a humidor, the interior appears MDF and it lacks a seal, this doesn't mean it can't keep humidity but you would need to buy a hygrometer anyway (I suggest you get a decent digital one.. I have a western caliber which is pretty accurate (but I recommend calibration just to be sure). As for humidification look up boveda, I made the switch and never looked back. I seriously doubt the cigars in their will smoke well but you may aswell try, nothing to lose right?

I would start with smaller sticks but that's your choice: Trinidad Reyes, RYJ short churchill, Hoyo de Monterrey brand are also very beginner friendly! But really cigars are a matter of taste, if you go Cuban I can't see a cigar you would dislike but tastes are down to your opinion not other peoples!

Have a look at the for sale section on here too, I still have a few left from my listing which I must say the hoyo petit robustos and scdlh's are great for a novice BOTL...

      Oh boy, Dan!
Very good reason to start smoking! Blessing of your father and all, looks like his spirit will live on in you!

Very standard and good for your money Cubans would be:
      Bolivar Petit Corona
Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2
      H. Upmann Half Corona
      H. Upmann Regalis/ Majestics
      Trinidad Reyes/Colonials
      Partagas Shorts
      Punch Coronation /Royal Coronation
      Ramon Allones Specially Selected
      La Gloria Cubana 4
      San Cristobal El Pr?ncipe

That sampler should really help you along in your cigar journey!

          Welcome to the forum

I doubt that box would work well as a humidor, but if you don't want to spend loads of money on one you can setup a tupperdor (basically tupperware with humidity ), they work perfectly well

I always find getting the Petit Corona sizes of brands is a good way to start, it'll give you a good idea of the different brands and will allow you to explore the ones you like further

Habana has pretty much said exactly what I would, though I will add that a Tupperdor is probably your best route though obviously stick with !BOVEDA!

If the RyJ's have been in tubes they may well be ok, anyhow don't throw anything away but try to humidify them slowly over say the next year or so!

Welcome aboard buddy and regardless of whether you can use the box as a humidor don't part with it. As for your hard cigars, if they are really rock hard and unsmokeable put them in a tupperware box with a ramekin of distilled water and just leave them for a few weeks. They will absorb the moisture and soften up but I'm afraid the best of the flavour will probably be lost forever so don't judge future purchases against what they will taste like.
