    Hi Folks,

Name's Chris and I'm from Belfast, NI. I first enjoyed a cigar almost 10 years ago at my formal, when I was 18. I actually bought a load of Phillies Titans and sold them to my friends at the formal and made a killing, but that's another story for another time... After enjoying a few Phillies Titans back then, I would have had the odd random cigar now and again over the next few years (mostly common low-end stuff that you can buy in a newsagent or pub, like Henry Wintermans etc. I didn't really smoke often enough to tell any difference between cigars. However, a few years ago, in my early 20s, I bought myself a humidor (supposed to hold 50 cigars) and started stocking up with a few bits and pieces. I collected a few cigars over the next couple of years, but didn't really smoke any as I didn't find many opportunities to smoke them (none of my friends share the hobby and my other half doesn't like the smell).

However, in the past few weeks, I have re-kindled my interest in the hobby and I've had 5 or so cigars. I really want to try several at this point to compare and find ones that I really like.

My humidor is full at the minute with the following:
Jose L Piedros (my other half brought me a pack of 25 back from holiday a year or 2 ago). Not sure of the exact one, but it is fairly long with a good ring size (I might measure one later to try to establish which one it is).
Don Tomas (I bought box of 10 of these in Duty Free on my way back from Dubai a couple of years ago). These are longer than the Jose L Piedros with a similar ring gauge.
Don Antonio - I think they are 'red', but will need to double check (I bought a few tubed singles in Duty Free on my way back from Dubai). These are HUGE. Very long with a larger ring gauge than the other 2 cigars mentioned above.
I also have a couple of random other cigars that people have given me as gifts and I also have a couple of Phillies 'chocolates' (I'm pretty certain that's what they are, although it just says Phillies on the band).

As regards taste etc., I enjoy the Jose L Piedros and the Don Tomas, although I'd maybe rate them 7/10 and 6/10 respectively. The Phillies Chocolate was the easiest and most enjoyable smoke, although it did leave a sweet taste on my lips from the wrapper while smoking.

As regards looks, I like a medium to long cigar, though not so long as to look silly. I also like a larger ring gauge.

Can you recommend a few cheaper cigars that spread from mild to medium to strong to try? I think if I find which end of the spectrum I enjoy most, I can then look for other similar cigars to find some that I really enjoy and invest some money in those. I love the cubans that I've tried so far, but I'm definitely not limiting myself to just cuban cigars. I'd happily try anything and everything.

A point to note is that there are only 1 or 2 B&M shops in NI that I'm aware of, so it may be a while before I get there and ask for some recommendations from them.

I'd also like to learn about which drinks accompany which cigars and I'm sure I'll find a lot of this info on this forum.

I've ordered myself a torch style lighter as I've been using a zippo to light the cigars up to now and I know this can spoil the taste of the cigar.

I plan to buy bigger humidor in the next month or 2 as my current one is full.

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome, there's a couple other members from Ni that pop in now and then.

I'm going to say right off the bat, get yourself an Oliva Serie G.... It's not flavoured but it has a very chocolatey rich smoke to it and it goes for reasonable cash too!

Welcome to the forum - I think you need to get a few more cubans in your humidor

I would just say to try as many different cigars as you can to get an idea of what you like - I'm not sure what you would consider cheap, but I would recommend the following as great smokes for under ?10:

      Ramon Allones Small Club Corona
      H. Upmann Half Corona
      Partagas Short
      Por Larranaga Petit Corona
      Cuaba Divinos
Montecristo No. 4 (not my favourite but one everyone should try it )
      Trinidad Reyes

There are loads more as well, and if you stretch to ?15 there are many, many more

Just had my first Hoyo De Monterray Epicure No 2 and that was worth every penny.

Hey Chris, good to have another from Belfast/Northern Ireland on the forums. My advice is too just keep trying loads of singles, both cuban and non-cuban, of differing sizes till you find what you like.

If you haven't already, try Miss Moran in Belfast for cigars and accessories, on the plus side they have a good selection of non-Cubans for decent prices including Alec Bradley, Oliva, Ashton, La Aurora, Davidoff etc, on the down side they're prices for Cubans can be a couple of quid more expensive than ordering online and they never ever crack a smile!

Got a new BBQ myself this year, a Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker, just need a few days sun now and we're sorted. Let us know how you go.

Hi Gary. Great to find another local! Yeah I have been in Miss Moran quite a few times, but not in the past couple of years. I think I read that it had been taken over a while back? I'll definitely be calling in soon though, to pick up a few singles. Do you recall any of their prices for any of those cigars you mentioned? Just so I can have an idea of what to go for when I get down there.

Do you ever meet any other local forum members? Are there any good spots in or around Belfast to enjoy a cigar?

None of my friends really enjoy a cigar, which is a shame.

Yeah Chris it was taken over a number of years ago by a guy and to his credit he has expanded the range he carries, particularly the non-Cubans, but the women he employs has ZERO people skills nor personality, so brace yourself .

Anyway, the cigars I mentioned should be got for under a tenner, particularly the Oliva "O" and "V" which I think are very good smokes for the price.

No have never met up with any other locals yet but it's been suggested a few times, so it could happen. There's an older thread which gets added to every now and then by one of the local members, started for the NI members about places to buy and smoke around the Provence, so do a wee search for that if you get the chance.

I actually think I seen that thread before I registered on the forum. I'll have a look for that.

Thanks for the info about Miss Moran. Will get a trip down sometime soon.
