So, the moral of the story? Determine the age of a stick before you stuff it in your mouth.

Thanks for that, I'll have a read at some point

What are peoples thoughts on buying sampler packs? Seem like a good way to try a wide variety. Any anybody would suggest? Or am I best just getting a few singles and making my own pack effectively?

            Welcome aboard Sam!

You'll certainly pick stuff up if you stick around these parts - there were some very helpful chaps about when I was finding my feet properly a few years ago, and there still are.

(As for the humidor - as many will tell you, the Adorinis are excellent. The key point, almost a mantra in these parts, is that the only rule when buying your humidor, is buy one bigger than you can begin to imagine needing... The bug bites very hard once the humi is in place).

Some good sticks you're enjoying there. I'm not a big Monte fan (never quite picked up the No4 for some reason), but do love the Petit Edmundo - possibly worth giving that one a shot. If you're up for trying Cohiba again, I love the Maduro range, and I find the standard range to be slightly different to the SIGLO range - do like the Exquisitos as a nice little smoke.

D4s might be harsh as hell for you to start. I've known many a mate who's gone home yeller-belly from smoking a D4 before building some immunity. Unless you can get your hands on one at LEAST 6 months old, I wouldn't touch em just yet. Too strong in my opinion (lest someone jump in to cut my line of anecdotal evidence? )
Uneven burns don't matter as much.. To me anyways. If they burn uneven, I just go to a less windy area and purge it. Sets the stick straight in under 10 draws!! .... Well most of the time.....

Also, siglos. My favourite has always been the III (although I've never tried the VIs though.. ). If you can find em cheap that is.. Have the taste of an II with an additional flavour added on AND they last longer!
Just makke sure you don't get tempted to smoke it under the year . God knows the only way I'd ever do that is if I got a box of 25.. or 250.....

I would avoid sampler packs to be honest, in my experience you don't save any money by buying them (and on one website they actually cost more than buying the same cigars as singles), I find it much better and exciting reading up about the various brands and vitolas and buying the ones that seem most interesting.

Another thing to do is to go into a tobacconist and ask them questions, I've found them to be incredibly helpful and they might recommend something you hadn't considered or even heard of. before.

Although there are some cigars that are full bodied and strong, I wouldn't necessarily say avoid them, for example, virtually everyone says anyone new to cigars like ourselves should avoid Bolivar, but I have smoked four Bolivars and they have all been excellent, so it really is down to personal taste 😊

                    Welcome Sam.

If I may throw my tuppence worth in, when you find a vitola you really enjoy like the magnum 46 (one of my personal favourites) which is a corona gorda, then explore that vitola in other marcas to see how they vary. I'd really recommend the Saint Luis Rey Serie A for something quite different.
