Spanish cedar is a member of the mahogany family. Sometimes called cigar box cedar, I will see if I can find a link.

Try emailing http://www.john-boddy-timber.ltd.uk/ as they've sourced it in the past

Will it make a huge difference if it is American red , can I not just treat the wood with distilled water , thanks for the advice so far

I think the reason that Spanish cedar is used is because it doesn't give off much of an odor that will affect cigar taste.

Red cedar may affect the taste of cigars

I think I will buy some cheap sticks to put in the humidor first see If that helps with the aroma

Seems a waste of time/money to not do it properly in the first place if I'm honest. You may aswell get a decent used humidor of eBay.

American red will overpower and possibly ruin your cigars.

I'd do it meself if i were you. Its just the happiness of having your OWN humidor that you built yourself. You can even place a digital humidor on the outside too!
It might cost a tad more because of the wood and epoxy coating, but hey, itll be so satisfactory in the end.......

Also, maybe get in touch with Chris from the newbie greets forum right now. He mentioned building his own. Ask for a few tips, tools, or maybe even light a stick each and sit down one saturday to build a humidor!
I personally would help you, but methinks the commute across the atlantic ocean is too long. And i really don't want to carry power tools on a plane....
