    Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself here, late 70's born newbie that, for some reason, has been bit hard by this bug! I really have no idea why now and not earlier, since I've smoked in the past. A friend of mine gave me 2 nice cigars (Siglo V and Serie P No 2) for my birthday last year and for some reason, since then I've been doing a ton of research and smoking when I can. Winter in London is a heck of a time to pick up smoking cigars, but so far I've managed okay with the help of a couple nice places.

There's a lot to learn, but this site has helped tremendously so thanks! I'm still trying to develop my taste, but have some nice experiences already and a near-empty humidor that's settling in. There are plenty of suggestions for new smokers here so I don't need to ask, but I will pose one question which is, what do you think about a beginner learning to smoke with nearly all Cubans? In some ways is this (arguably) like learning to drink with only fine wines so the bar is set pretty high from the start. I ask as it seems like availability is 20:1 in favour, and some places don't carry anything else.

Anyways, thanks for already helping me find my feet and navigate the early days. I'm amazed at how technology and the Internet has made this hobby so much more accessible, i.e. tons of knowledge, and cheaper access to great equipment so you don't need to spend a fortune. Cigars themselves... still pricey though!

    Cheers,

    Chris

    Hi Chris, welcome

Im going to be highly controversial by saying that I think many Cuban cigars are over-rated. I think there are some excellent as well as better alternatives out there, so I wouldnt necessarily suggest learning purely with Cubans, but experimentation is the name of the game, and hopefully all cigars will form part of your learning curve.

I await a battering from the pro-Cuban brigade

But welcome. I just joined too

Welcome to the forum Chris, it's got to start getting warmer soon and we will all be happy to find more places to enjoy a good cigar.

Hello Andy - I'm only 6 years in as an expat but much longer than I expected! Also from California, but this seems 3 lifetimes ago... Agree there will certainly be excellent NC's out there which is completely logical, I just don't see many around when I'm out.

Hi Nic - let's hope it is a short winter indeed. I decided to walk home from work a couple weeks ago so I could try another Partagas but it was freezing. That and the rat race going from the City to Central made for a less than relaxing experience. Pretty much the opposite of what I enjoy about cigars! My ipod wasn't enough to overcome the chaos.

          Welcome aboard!

Theres always a discussion going on about cubans vs non cubans. In my opinion, smoke whatever you enjoy. I've barely scraped the surface of the NC world.

There are some bargain smokes to be had and they can be a nice way of stocking up your humidor fiarly cheaply.

Trouble seems to be that buying NCs in this country can sometimes cost as much as a cuban.

Try as many different cigars as you can, its easy to find something you like and stick to them, but you may be missing out!

Don't be scared to ask questions!

Thanks Adam - I'm really enjoying discovering all the different tastes out there so this is a great time in my smoking history. Look forward to more of a discerning taste also, a more developed palette. Definitely need some more stocks for the humidor - it holds 100 and looks so pitiful with 3 at the moment. The humidifier and dividers are taking up more space!!

I'm still using a tupperdor. My new humidor should be here by the end of the week though

Keep an eye on the for sale section. Ive managed to smoke some sticks I wouldn't have been able to justify paying retail prices on, but thanks to fair pricing from fellow members, i've been lucky.

Also start badgering any friends or family going abroad to brin you back some presents

Actually... insomnia led to me booking a trip to Geneva March 2 to stock up. I know. I'm losing it... AND my other half is coming to double the allowance! But that's another post all together.

Thanks for the tip - I haven't even seen the for sale section. Tupperdors are amazing - I love the DIY fixes and so long as you have accurate temp/humidity readings you're set. Technology.... used to be ultra expensive ornate humidors and apple cores (or so I read) as a humidifier.

Welcome to the Forum. I'm quite new myself although not to cigars. Your location isn't displayed at present but, in due course, there will be Forum members who can suggest retailers who will offer a range of Cubans and non-Cubans. You will then be able to start your journey of exploration. I'm quite new to non-Cubans but, in a very short time, I have found very acceptable cigars giving great pleasure. You could do much worse than exploring the Forum's sponsors - C.Gars - if you want to sample non-Cubans. Nice people and very helpful. The most important thing to remember - just enjoy the experience !

Thanks David - location added I received my first package from C.Gars not long ago and will definitely be back for more. When browsing American retailers the variety of NC's is mind boggling.

I stopped buying from Cgars about a year ago. They're friendly and helpful enough but I found the freshness of their stock a little questionable on two consecutive occasions, and on the next occasion, instead of sending me cigars, they sent me pipe tobacco, so I gave up
