  • Hi to all

Hi guys new thirty something from the Hertfordshire area here.

I have been enjoying cigars for many years but mostly from off licences cabinets until four years ago when my parents went to Cuba. They brought me back some RYJ no.2 and I started to think there might be more to it than just a long smoke.

In singapore earlier this year i picked up two HDM Epicures no1 to enjoy with my bro in New Zealand and enjoy them we did. So on returning from New Zealand this year I decided to get a humidor and start getting to know what I like.

During getting a humidor together and setting it up I have found the forum indispensable so decided I should join up and keep reading.

Here are some pics of my humidor. I know it is small but once I get rolling it will most likely be moved to the office and an upgrade will be investigated.

I do have a quick question which I have not searched (sorry) but it is more of a yes no question. My house gets down to about 15degrees during the day is this to cold or is it just high temperatures that are the problem.

Last little note, have to just say how great the guy in Burlington Berties was at helping me pick up some sticks to try.

Welcome aboard mate im sure you will find plenty of information here along with a warm welcome.
From what I have read I believe 18degrees is a good temperature to have, but the more experienced guys will be able to fill you in better on that. I have heard that at 15degrees the temperature may start to become too low and if goes down further it can affect the level of water/humidity that can be carried by the air. But listen to the experienced guys for that, id also like to hear their opinion.
Do you also mean that your house gets down to 15degrees or the temperature inside your humidor gets down to 15?
That info will the others answer your question better

When I got home today it was 15 in the humi. Might have to move it upstairs in the winter.

Oh! Hi there! I didn't see you come in. I was just...errr, working on me homework!

Welcome to the show, chico! We hope you enjoy you your stay!

Now, regarding the temp in your house. It is a wee bit cold, but should not be a problem. How warm does it get when you are home? Severe temp. swings can be nasty on your puros.

BTW, nice looking rig ya' got there. A wee bit small, but nice, nonetheless!

I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.

                Hi Joncon and welcome.

Here is my opinion in reference to your query on temperature:
It would appear to me that the general concern with temperatures is more to do with beetles, which can infest your cigars at temperatures above 70F. Also, the thing to avoid is excessive changes in temperature, which directly influences the relative humidity.

Relative humidity, though not directly proportional to temperature, does increase as temps decrease, and visa versa - it is a law of physics that cannot be undone, of which you are probably aware. Some of these bead/gel humidification devices regulate the RH in both directions, viz. they put moisture into the air and take moisture out of the air to maintain a RH. Damp salt works in accordance with this principle maintaining a RH of 75%. However, the bead/gel humidification devices can only regulate the RH at a certain rate, meaning that rapid changes in temperature produce uncontrollable variations in humidity.

Here is a thread I started last month with some very helpful input from others. http://www.ukcigarforums.com/showthr...ure-Variations. Note Puff Scotty's comments, who provided some reassuring info regarding temp/RH variations. As a foot note, Puff Scotty 'IS' made from tobacco and therefore offers sound advice. Be warned, however, that Puff runs screaming through the glades at weekends in only his underpants blamming the living daylights out of stuff with his rifles.

I think, so long as the temps are not rocketing up and down, i.e. you don't have your humidor next to a radiator or something like that, things will be fine. I have my humidor in the bedroom because it is the most stable room in the house.

welcome to the forum, best to leave your humi in a room with less temperature swings, try leaving it in your wardrobe with a towel wrapped a round

Thanks for the link mrcigar it was very interesting in more ways than one.

In my job at a control and instrumentation company I have to work with trending different variables levels, pressures, temperatures etc. so I was very interested with the idea of trending humidity and temperature in and out of the humidor. Also puff's input to the thread was very interesting. I may have to borrow some bits from work some time and have a play.

As for my temperature problem I will be trying the hall which is quite chilled but probably more stable. As long as 15-16 degrees is not to cold it should be all good. If not I will be bring it to the bedroom.

There is a old argument that still goes on today about whether to intentionally increase the RH as temps drop. Here's the thinking: As the temps drop and the RH naturally increases. Your humidification device will then reduce the moisture in the air so as to bring the RH down. Therefore, the actual amount of moisture in the air is less than it was. Eventually, as the temps approach 16C the air becomes too dry and the RH would have to be 100% in order to maintain a suitable environment to avoid drying the cigars out. There is some truth in this, which is why it's not such a good idea to store cigars in the fridge. It is for a similar reason why our lips dry out in the winter time - the air is dry, despite the RH being high.
My advice is to avoid temps as low as 15 if you can, and follow the practice of peanutpete.

                              Hi Jon and welcome.

My advice is not to sweat too much on the humi, find the most stable point and keep an eye buy as long as there are not huge humidity swings everything should be all right. Cigars are pretty robust.
