  • Just came back

Hi All, glad to virtually meet you all. I have only been into cigars for a couple of years and started when I lived in the US. I have finally decided to come back to the UK after 9 years away and am now seeing what the big deal is with the Cubans. I thought that the guys in the states drooled over these because they were the forbidden fruit but after a few R&J Short Churchills, some Cohibas Siglos and some Partagas SD4s, I now see that they are pretty good. Most of my collection is stuck in customs after they tried to screw me out of ?2500 for duties, and more duties, and VAT on the duties after I have already paid tax in the US and labour and admin fees for the pleasure of them going through my stuff. I may have to cut my losses. I am still in shock at the prices here compared to the US, and they do have some great NCs there but luckily I get to travel often and can utilise some favourable Duty Free shops. I did manage to bring a box of Liga Privadas with me though.

Anyway, I have been hovering around the site for a while and thought I should join in as it seems to be a good place with good folks to share cigar stuff with.

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your smokes - that's a hell of a lot of taxes to pay and it must be gutting to have to consider giving up your collection. If you don't mind me asking, roughly how many cigars were you trying to bring across?

You're right to say that the prices here are extortionate - this has undoubtedly got to be one of the most expensive places in the world for tobacco products. On the plus side we get easy access to real Cubans, so I guess it's swings and roundabouts.

Maybe you can be our new source of information about what's new in the world of NCs - we seem to be a fair bit behind the US in that respect. I've heard a lot of good things about Liga Privada, but we can't get our hands on Drew Estate cigars in the UK.

Anyway, welcome on board and I hope you enjoy it here.

Hi Crusse, thanks for the welcome. 450 cigars @4.8 kilos. They charge 26 percent on the perceived value, the a bit over ?200 per kilo, then VAT on all of that, then admin fees over ?100 and then labour fees. Nice welcome back from our friends at HM Customs!

Welcome mate...Sad to hear about your trouble with HMRC. Mind you, if they didn't screw you over, what would all the big wigs over at the olympics be smoking? "Mozwick...Official supplier of the games"

I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.
