  • Hello from Gloucestershire

About time that I actually joined rather than being a lurker....

I have been a pipe smoker for about 45 years, and have enjoyed the occasional cigar during that time. It was only recently that I became a little more passionate about cigars, and wanted to learn more.

    Corner of the dining room:

and a close up of the current contents....

At this time I am still working through samplers to see which cigars appeal to me the most, before buying more.

But that small humidor isn't going to be big enough :-)
    (You heard that before, right?)

I am at present adapting a larger old display cabinet which should fit the bill nicely. I'm not yet sure whether to use it upright or flat on its back, but either way will work.

You will also note in the background of my workshop that there is a wood turning lathe where I spend much of my time. (Being retired is good!). A few days ago I had the idea of combining two passions, and made these shaving brushes in elm wood....

The bands are totally sealed under an acrylic finish, and so that you can't feel the edges.

    Cheers
    Rod

    Hello and welcome Rod

A nice selection you have there, that gold band Fundadores is a stonking smoke!

Looks like the cabinet conversion is going well too and as for the shaving brushes, they are superb!

Before you know it you'll be drawing up plans for your 1000 capacity humidor

I have already tried a Trinidad Reyes and a couple of sumptuous Robusto Extra. I could get spoiled by those!
The Fundadores came with a few other cigars from a guy in Sweden in exchange for a shaving brush
I am looking forwards to trying that one!

Hello Rod and welcome. If you are ever in birmingham and fancy a smoke, please feel free to visit us at The Prince of Wales in Moseley.

The shaving brushes look superb. Are these just are one off or do you plan to make and sell a few? I am doing a charity event all next month (Movember) ... its all about growing a moustache to raise awareness of prostrate and testicular cancer. If you fancy making a few shaving brushes and selling them to me, I would be really keen.

            Either way, welcome aboard.

            Keith

                Hi Keith
I would be more than happy to donate a brush to your cause. I do sell brushes that I make, but with the cigar band brushes I am not supposed to advertise and sell them.... because of the UK laws on tobacco adverts and associated stuff! (I know, I know, its a shaving brush!)

Contact me backchannel and we can work something out.
(It appears that as a newbie to the forum I can't send PMs, so let me know your email address)

                Cheers

I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.

Welcome! Nice shaving brushes. Might have to do a Trotter deal when you get the PM status!

EDIT: What am I thinking, forgot to say nice smokes!

                        Welcome.

That cabinet will look great, especially stood up, just a matter of finding a dark corner somewhere!

                        Nice work.

Love those brushes Rod. Coincidentally, my brush fell to bits this morning. Are they for sale? I'd love a Juan Lopez brush

                              Indeed.
And to clarify from my standpoint....
Folks, I don't want to break any forum rules (especially as a new subscriber), and I don't want to encourage others to do so either.

I posted the photos of the shaving brushes I had made just out of general interest, and because I was pleased with them.
I do make and sell shaving brushes (but not with the cigar bands. See below)
I am here for the cigar chat and to learn!
It would be against the forum rules me to to offer them for sale.
It would most probably be against the (UK) law to advertise them for sale anyway, as the shaving brushes contain images associated with tobacco & smoking, and that's a no-no.
There is almost certainly a trade mark problem in offering to sell them too.

Only one has left my workshop so far (with a Bolivar band), and that was to a friend (a member of a shaving forum) who sent me 4 Cuban PCs and a Fundadores in exchange. Personally I see no problem with doing a trade between us in that manner. But what I can't do is advertise them or sell them, as it would most probably be illegal to do so. Could I do future trades, ("Trotter" fashion as someone else mentioned), with forum members? Probably. I don't have the status to send PMs at the moment, (and it wouldn't be right to tout using the PM system) but "Rod shaving brushes" is not hard to find on the net.

I am very pleased and flattered that people like my shaving brushes, and thanks for the nice comments. But I am going to play by the forum rules.

and now.... I'm off to do some more work on that display cabinet to humidor conversion... before a couple of attractive boxes arrive in the post tomorrow.

                              Cheers
                              Rod
