A bit of an early start from me but the sun's out (even if it's a bit chilly) and the latest CJ has arrived.
ERdM CS 2008 today. One of the very best morning sticks
Yesterday I had a RASS 898 RE and while the flavour was OK, it was so hard to smoke. Every draw had to be paced to avoid smoking it too hot. Every good draw was followed by a bad one with bitter notes.
Today I am having this Dominican boutique cigar and not only is the construction superior, I also enjoy the flavours a lot more.
The more I smoke the less I am taken by CCs. Yes, some CCs are fantastic, but usually also twice as expensive. On average, I am more often disappointed by Cuba than byNCs.
I now think I may be an NC man... I was expecting big things from this at nearly 6 years old. Although the draw was just about perfect, and a good enough burn for a Cuban (only a couple of touch ups), I just found the flavour a little lacking... Perhaps this particular cigar just wasnt 'on', but still a little disappointing. I got it down to the nub, but other than spice and woodiness, couldnt discern too much else 🤔.

I've smoked some well made CCs recently but more NCs, this recent little Camacho had perfect construction and all for just £4.50.
Whereas this Oliva Melanio 2018 LE, at 5 times the price, had burn issues.

You seem to be having unusual issues with your Oliva's! I wouldn't pay extra for the LE's over the standard as they're so similar (can normally pick up the LEs same price as the standard imo) but very unusual to have burn issues with anything they roll.

I'd be happy to take the rest of your RA 898s off your hands Nils.

Yeah unusual, I was surprised and was expecting more, I would have bought the straight Robustos but thought I'd give these a try, price is decidedly not the same for these LEs, but am thinking for NCs there is not much more benefit, flavours were not more complex either.

Could just not be to your taste too I’m a big fan of the Oliva V’s but I do prefer the standard and Maduro over the Melanio

Not had a V yet but heard many prefer them over the Melanio. I've got a Special G that smells great, a kind of savoury earthy mushroom, looking forward to smoking that one next month, and a much nicer price.
A much more pleasant smoke than the PSP2 I tried earlier. Similar flavour profiles with the wood most prominent with some spice there too, but this one just delivered those flavours much better. Smoother and without falling off or getting muddied towards the end. I'll be on the lookout for more of these I think

I've never had the LE Maduro, but have tried the standard V and Melanio (almost) back-to-back, and I couldn't really tell a great deal between them. If anything the melanio seemed a little muted in comparison ... So for me the V wins on value.
I seem the remember the special G being a bit of a chocolate/coffee bomb, packs plenty of flavour into that small package
