I found the RA ER 898,smokable from the beginning to be honest but I should try another & see how they are progressing.

Went to my friend Rony's funeral this afternoon, very sad affair. Just the Priest (she was a personal friend & his only other visitor) & me.

We walked behind the hearse & when at the side enterance they opened the rear door & revealed an urn. I was expecting a service before hand. The Funeral Director said a few words in Dutch, the Priest said her part & that was it, they spread his ashes on the grass.

After they had gone, I crushed a small machine made Dutch cigarillo over his ashes, from a box he gave me several yrs ago.

On the bright side smoking didn't kill him, despite people saying for yrs he should quit. He made 79yo & had enough, the fall was just the mechanism that finished him off.

So I am smoking an unbanded Boli Lonsdale, from Tippex's collection. Undecorated but still a very decent vintage smoke. Farewell old friend.

Indeed PJ, however he did have a lovely young lady holding his hand for several hrs before & as he passed, so he knew someone was there at least. If you haven't got any family left, that's more than most of us can hope for. Personally my ashes will be scattered at sea off Devonport, something available for RN Veterans, I just can't get this scattering in a grey pile ash of the grass. Happened to my Father in law, was enough to break the stoniest of hearts.

I found they had quite a lot of ammonia when they reached the second half in the beginning, which has now disappeared.

Very sad story about your friend. As I grow older my perspective on death is ever changing and I have developed a certain fear of it that I never had when I was younger. But I think I would rather have 2 people that really cared show up for my funeral than 50 that are just there because they have to.

OK Neila, understand now but no ammonia noted in my two cabs. Smoked my first within 3months, just to see if I should buy more & it should a good deal of promise. The real question is whether they will turnout to be as classic as the original 898, which I have had the pleasure of trying a couple of times.

Indeed, 2 close friends are sure better than hoards of relatives who go just due to 'duty' or interest in the will! I guess it's also the price for outliving your friends & family. However, I'd hope as a long standing member of the British Legion of 30yrs+, they will at least make sure there is representation & the sound The Last Post.

Apologies, easy to think everyone knows the old vitolas, just like talking about the original singers of pop tunes. It was the same vitola, in varnished boxes, discontinued officially in '92 but I don't think they'd been made for some time before that. Tried my first at our Sponsor's old offices, many yrs ago. Had a couple since from stock bought from ex-members collections.
Will it be as great as that original?

I think it'll turn out like the Boli' Gold Medal. I never had an original but those who have suggest the new one is a really good smoke but not quiet the same. As they have changed tobacco strains since then, the best we can hope for is a damn fine smoke & I think it's on track for that at least. I might try one this weekend & if so, will report.

As a long time smoker that keeps notes and all, can you tell that flavours of regular production have changed over the decades? I've heard that CC used to be stronger for example and that bolivar had a citrus note that you don't get today anymore etc...
