I try to make a point every year of smoking the Cigar Aficionado Cigar of the Year and the My Father Le Bijou 1922 box pressed torpedo is the winner for 2015.
Its a beautiful looking cigar with a splendid band as you can see. The wrapper is a dark chocolate brown with an almost matte finish that smelled faintly of cocoa. I usually light before I cut but on this occasion took off a quarter inch to sample the cold draw. The tobacco looked compressed beneath the cut, partially due of course to the cutting, and the draw was light and aromatic. The initial contact left a chilli burn on my lips.
It lit nicely without any initial pepper and was soon producing lots of thick white smoke.
The initial flavour had slightly bitter coffee notes that smoothed out into a more caramel flavour but retained that bitter edge for the first third when it became smoother and more rounded. There was never any hint of pepper despite that initial chilli on the wrapper.
The ash was light and flakey and held for the first third but was starting to droop when i tapped it off. It burned straight and well until the half way mark whence it needed a few relights.
Best cigar in the world last year? No
Good smoke? Yes
Good enough to buy again? No
