Smoked a Fonseca Consacos today for the first time. I'd always wondered what lay underneath the unusual tissue wrapper and I wasn't disappointed. Probably the mildest Cuban (?) The presentation and build was superb. Smoke was mild and smooth in the first third with nutty (hazelnut perhaps?) flavours developing a light hint of pepper tang in the last third. Left a sweetness on the lips. Really easy to smoke and a consistent burn all the way. Enjoyed it with a big mug of hot chocolate!
Managed to finish it before the Eagle nabbed it[emoji3]
I don't normally take a cigar out with me when I'm out and about (camping yes, but not hiking.) but as I did this time I felt it deserved a little write up.
Last year the inlaws brought me back some Monte Open Junior Tubos from holiday. Now I have to say I'm not the biggest fan of the Open range but I keep hearing good tidbits from others and in particular I have heard a couple times that they were blended to smoke well outside (Round of golf.)
So I thought it would be an interesting opportunity to put it to the test and not be too worried about wasting someting I love.
Lighting wasnt straight forward even even with a jet flame -5 without factoring wind chill is evidently at the edge of a TorJets limits.
Once it was in it tasted just like cedar, literally like a burning stick of cedar. It did canoe but I can hardly hold that against it in these conditions.
Strangely despite the conditions making the stick burn hotter than normal it was nothing that stopped it in its tracks. It didn't go harsh at all.
Well I have to say that being alone up there made me feel like the king of the world..... I just needed a crown!
Crown on head and off we set. The Open, actually sorted the burn out on its own and by mid way was burning like a laser. At about this point I started to get a hint of Caramel and even a bit of heather.
The stick died just before the Nub when I needed both hands to pull myself from a quagmire. Though I was close to calling it a day anyway. But just before it died I had a few moments to stop and apreciate the building flavours.
Great read Marc , I do a lot of hiking as well the peace and solitude is a tonic for the soul . Great stick by the sound of it well suited for the conditions

+1 on that. Also like being in the mountains a lot.
Looks a great walk that. Like the old school rucksack.
