Matches are fine, just let them burn all the end Off first.

If it happens again or your cigar develops a flavour you don't like try purging it by blowing firmly back through the cigar to expel the gases. Put your hand under the ash though unless you're outside.

Did we figure out if there's someone near by for you to have a smoke with?

Had a friend around for the evening who found out I like cigars. Well he got me one of these. To be polite I smoked it whilst he was here. All I can say is never again, good construction an only had one burn issue but was completely tasteless, understanding it is only a cheap nc and it was free I can't really complain I suppose

So, tonight I had No.9 in Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 for 2013. (I knew I'd still be on 2013 when the 2014 Top 25 arrived.) Anyway, it's the Gurkha 125th Anniversary XO which I'm assured "has a lovely flavor of dried orange peel, some leather and cedar, and is a balanced smoke with no shortage of elegance." I don't know what elegance tastes like, but I kept an eye out for the others.

I loved the smell of the unlit cigar. Just the right amount of sweetness. Although it's a large RG (60), I cut it, so it was quite an easy draw, though nothing noteworthy about the taste.

Lighting was very easy and in no time I was enjoying lots of smoke, with hints of leather and, yes, I really think I could taste oranges, though not for long. In fact, for the first inch or so, it was truly enjoyable. There was an element of creamy smoothness and nothing at all sharp or harsh, and it stayed that way. I don't know what reputation Gurkhas have but I was quite impressed by the end of the first third.

The middle third remained leathery, getting a bit more intense, but retaining that creamy smoothness I'd enjoyed. It didn't really seem to get much more complex than that - that's not a negative and maybe someone with more finely tuned taste would pick something else out. For me, it simply continued to be a thoroughly enjoyable smoke.

The final third was much more robust. Some strong leathery taste and black coffee - still really delicious, but less smooth. Unfortunately events conspired to diminish my enjoyment of the rest. A chap turned up with a Cohiba Robusto. Initially I thought 'yes! A fellow BOTL' until he started shouting about taxation, politicians, immigrants, etc. It was hard to relax with someone ranting away. I suppose I could have chucked my cigar and left, but then he'd have completely spoiled a great smoke.

This was my first experience of Gurkhas. (Well, not quite, I spent a bit of time with the Gurkhas on a border patrol in Hong Kong in 1990!) On the basis of this evening's cigar I'd be keen to try some more. So, the Top 25 is responsible for yet another box of NCs joining my already long wish list!

Are you sure it wasn't a 'soapy' taste .... that isn't uncommon and occurs from time to time in CCs.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!
