Back after a few days out with family for half term, relatives visiting, etc. Missed y’all!
This evening, it’s No.25 in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 of 2013: the ‘Romeo by RyJ’ Toro. (Technically, it should have been the tubo, but none available.) I am supposed to experience “dark, oily smoke [with] meaty notes, hints of dark roasted coffee and a complex character”. Not sure what ‘meaty’ means. Robust? Roast beef?
I don’t think I am capable of doing a review justice, but here are a few thoughts on my Hallowe’en smoke. First of all, it’s a very attractive cigar. I’m not really into ‘marketing’, so the heavily stylised band isn’t my taste, but the cigar itself is a beautiful rich brown, with a reddish tinge. It has a light earthy smell, with a hint of sweetness. I punched it (first time I’ve punched any cigar) and the pre-lit draw was spot on.
It was easy to light and yielded loads of smoke before settling down. Sometimes, cigars for me are as much or more about the smell as the taste. Perhaps that’s a good thing because for the first inch or so, the taste wasn’t anything in particular, but it smelled great. After the first inch, I began to detect the coffee, a rich cup of coffee with cream. The trouble was, even as I approached half way, nothing more happened - that rich cup of coffee stayed with me for ages. Only in the last third did the flavour get fuller and more intense, but I wouldn’t say it was particularly complex.
The ash was firm and white and held for the first 2 inches, and the burn was dead even all the way.
I can’t fault it, in that I really liked the taste and aroma, and on that basis I might even consider getting some more as a pleasant evening smoke. As this is No.25, it bodes well for the rest.
