Montecristo Edmundo, after a really stressful day playing at being a naval officer. Not sure why I fill spare time doing Reserve service, but it?s away from home so this is my 4^th cigar in as many nights.

Had an Edmundo last night as well, but appreciate the sentiment ? no pics, no smokes ? so here is tonight?s (sorry, no idea how to load decent sized images).

I?ve only had a few Montecristo No 3s (thought I had No 4s, but I stand corrected!), a Bolivar No 1 and a couple of Bolivar Coronas (I think that?s what they are). I know I should expand my horizons (and very much looking forward to it), but I could see myself settling into Montecristos, including the Edmundo.

Without much experience, I can?t speak in terms of flavours, etc., and I don?t have many references to compare things to, but I like the shape, the balance of weight and size, and the smell of the unlit cigar is just amazing. In fact, I could spend forever with that aroma around me.

Even I knew the draw on last night?s was loose (right term?) and I thought that might spoil it. I can also see why some reviewers say Edmundos make a lot of smoke and not much flavour (at least to start with), but last night it did eventually build into something enjoyable. However, tonight?s has been much tighter and developed really early into a fuller-bodied and compelling cigar. I say compelling because there was something perfect about the balance of taste and smell, especially later on, and I couldn?t put it down. I foolishly risked singed fingers and beard just to keep going that little bit longer, but here it is, not long before I finally said farewell.

Still made a whole heap of smoke, but it?s fragrant and it?s meant I?ve had the hotel garden largely to myself!

How is it Sludgie?

The wrapper is gorgeous.

Great so far. Huge volumes of smoke. Great draw and even burn - lovely ash. Lots of chocolate and coffee flavours with an underlying sweetness, no doubt from that Maduro wrapper. I have just been reading some reviews, the wrapper is a Mexican wrapper produces and grown especially for the Drew Estate to make this line. You learn something new every day!

Are you ex Royal Navy? I'm an ex CT. I'm in the RNR too, based at JSSU Digby. Where are you based?

Yes, ex-Pusser and submariner. Left the RN in '99, took a decade off and decided one day out of the blue to join the RNR. Cambria is my local unit, but I do Media Ops so tasking comes from a desk in Navy HQ.

Didn't think Digby would still be open. Went to school in Grantham, so had a couple of friends whose dads were in the RAF at Digby. Guessing Sludgie might be from 'sludgemariner'? I never came across any CTs in submarines - thought most of you were in the T22s or at Digby?

Glad to see your using your time away form home wisely undercover, ex scablifter heremy first draft was to boats but managed to fail the medical, much prefer life as a skimmer. In fact still at sea running the Sickbay out here in the North Sea. I had a mixed short affair with Edmundos as well. My first one was smoked on hols in Spain, so wonderful I went & brought a whole box the next day a significant invest at the time for me). After bringing them home & smoking four large, boringly flat cigars, I sold the rest. Had a couple since, see glimpse of greatness but never hit the spot like the first one. Sometimes it's the event, the atmosphere & being half cut by the end of it, that affects ones perceptions.

Yes, ex-submariner too. I joined up as a Radio Operator and served on O Boats, then Killicks course and Faslane Commcen. I went CT, and alas skimmer, in 1995 due to lack of promotion in boats due to so many being scrapped and the rosters getting ridiculously long. I was an Arabic interpreter by trade, so I mainly served at tri-service units, but had HMS Coventry as ships company, as well as spells on board several type 23s in the Gulf. I got back on boats a few times too. Ended up with 4 years instructing at Chicksands, and 2 years at Collingwood as a course designer. Now a Learning and Development consultant and I currently work at Milton Keynes redeveloping their Telecoms training.
