Went to the lab bench. I saw VTG Marc's post earlier on Calcium Silicate vs Silica Gel.
So i went to go turn kitty litter into Silica Gel for a better humidification. The process called for acidification.
Here's the result with Hydrochloric Acid:
Unfortunately, this gave off Chlorine gas that i really didn't want to deal with. I also should've wrote down the chemical equation so i would've actually known. Damn.
I tried this with the stronger Sulphuric Acid (less chlorine in my lungs) and i guess it worked better. But it's too expensive to do that... big shame, really. Was nice seeing the acidification process.
Final verdict: Just stick to buying Silica Gel

Smoking in the lab with hydrochloric & sulphuric acid getting everywhere, including your gloves, putting cigar to lips
. Health & Safety obviously hasn't reach your shores yet Jeremy but I thought common sense had. Expirment first (with fume cupboard) & smoke later after washing hands.
