I've never understood whisky on the rocks. It's not a drink that I feel should be cold and when the ice melts it waters down the whisky and you lose a lot of taste. I know you can get those whisky stones as well but they only chill it slightly so it seems a bit pointless to me

My father in law has ice in his whisky and point blank refuses water but ten minutes later that's exactly what he's got. You tell me.

It depends on the Whisky .. Chill filtered or not . If you add ice you alter the taste if it's not been chill filtered. Water is ok.

I'm of the understanding that chill filtering has no relation to the act of putting ice into the finished product.

Chill filtering being the act of dropping the whisky temperature to upto -10 degrees and passing it through a fine mesh. This is done to attain higher visual clarity and It's argued wether this affects the final flavour (once back to room temperature.) I personally think it has to, but almost everyone here knows my thoughts on freezing things so let's not recover old ground.

The act of putting ice cubes directly into the liquid is more an effect on the flavor, firstly by dilution and secondly by the perception that cold liquids reveal less flavours.

The understanding of human taste perception isn't particularly advanced, for example until recently it was accepted that different parts of the tongue had different taste buds for different flavours, I believe this has been debunked and it is now thought that the whole of the tongue participates in the detection of all flavours.

It all comes down to a protein which is genetically linked to the transduction of flavour compounds, called TRPM5 (Transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily M, member 5)
What is known about TRPM5 is that temperature and electricity have a profound effect on it.... Want proof? Lick a 9v battery cross terminals to find out what electricity "tastes" like.

I've used marbles to chill whiskey before. Clean them in some vinegar, wash them in distilled water, and toss them in the freezer.

Put 5 in your glass and all I swell!
