connemara peated single malt irish whiskey

hey all,
picked up a bottle of this yesterday!!! i kinda strayed off my usual whiskey path with this one, i'm generally not a fan of peated whiskies (especially scotch), but this one is a real exception!!!

tbh, i usually find the peated smokiness of scotch too much and overpowering to be enjoyable, and in my opinion nothing beats the smoothness of irish whiskey (especially bushmills)!!! the connemara peated single malt has the right balance for me, it's smooth, with smokey overtones, that leaves a wonderful taste in the mouth!!! there's a load of lovely flavours in there that pair perfectly with a nice cuban cigar..... i had a couple with a VR famosos, perfect match!!! both the cigar and the whiskey had similarities...... oak, chocolate, honey, peat smokiness.......

definitely worth trying and well recommended!!!

I can 2nd this opinion you have to like a smokey peat taste/ tang but if u do it's mellow magic!!!
Don't rush this one and don't add ice or water ( blasphemy )

btw, water and/ or ice in whiskey? brings to mind Michaleen Og Flynn from the quiet man (funny, the location of the quiet man isn't far from connemara):

Good stuff this, and for note I love the peated stuff and find irish a bit too smooth or even sweet, like it's a dessert whiskey (in wine-y terms) so this one is a nice inbetweener

Gotta agree with Michaleen there meself, I have only ever seen the point of adding a drop of water to some of the cask strength 50%+ stuff, but even then once yr used to the burn the flavours all come thru, you just have to persist

Interesting, I've never tried any of the Irish Whiskies apart from the standard Jameson. Being in Scotland I've been mainly focusing on the Single Malts...time to broaden my horizon a bit

How does the Connemarra compare to the Islay malts?

hey spartan,
generally i find most scotch whiskies, especially islay's, too peaty for my liking!!! i find they overpower, rather than compliment, any cigar i smoke!!! this, however, is perfectly balanced!!! it's as smokey as it's sweet!!! it's kinda like middle ground between irish and scotch....

also.......jameson's, as much as it's nice, is very light!!! i much prefer anything from bushmills (especially black bush, 10 yr old single malt and 16 yr old single malt)!!! red breast pot stilled is great stuff!!! also, any of the tyrconnell's are fantastic!!!

Your advice is much appreciated senor robusto! We've got a nice traditional whisky bar here in Aberdeen which has a nice selection of Irish Whiskies, I definately remember seing the black bush along with the connemarra...I'll pay a visit in the weekend to try a few!
