  • How do you store your whisky?

I suppose this is more of a 'how do you store your spirits' type of question, but the added variable of boxes/tubes comes into it with whisky.

Do you keep your whisky in the boxes/tubes they come in? At the moment I keep all of mine in the boxes/tubes, but it's taking up a whole lot of space in a small kitchen! In fact, it's pretty much made my kitchen trolley unusable! I've also got a couple of whiskies hidden away in a deep drawer, along with the gin and rum etc.

Ideally I'd like a space saving (and preferably cheap) way of displaying my 'little' collection (size is relative I suppose). How do you guys store your whisky? In a cupboard/drawer in the kitchen, a worksurface, a bookcase in the living room...

Ideally I'd love a proper drinks cabinet, but nowhere seems to do them anymore, and the couple it is possible to find are semi-bespoke and mightily expensive.

I would quite like one of those globe drinks stands though... is that wrong...?

I have my whiskys in my wine rack since we very rarely indulge in the grape.

I keep my whisky in tubes and boxes when they come in them. Some of them are nice to look at so are worth keeping.

I always keep them upright. I can't remember where I read it but I am sure that keeping them upright is the recommeded way of storing bottles. I have seen corks dry out though so that might be wrong.

Some of my bottles are on display and some are in a cupboard as I don't have enough space to keep them all on display.

Any that I will keep for a while (either to sell later or just to keep) are in a dark cupboard in a room with a reasonably constant temperature.

The ones I have that are currently open are to hand.

I got a globe drinks cabinet for Christmas from my wife. It is by far the coolest thing in my living room

As for storage, I mix it up - if I like the packaging (Bowmore Legend tube for example) then I keeep it in there. If I don't then I chuck the packaging away or pop it into a decanter.

Bottom line is that it's only packaging. It's the juice inside that matters
I'm still waiting for the whiskey to whisk me away
And I'm still waiting for the ashtray to lead me astray

I had all mine in a cupboard, in the tubes. Before that I had a shelf I put up just for the purpose. Worked out about 8 quid from IKEA for the shelf and three brackets.
They are all currently in a solvent box though...

Mine's tucked away in the back of the kitchen cupboard. But I've only one bottle, so I guess it really isn't an issue.

In a cupboard in the kitchen in the tube it comes in, I don't have many bottles so I have no need for anything more. I keep the bottle in the tubes for safteys sake.

I store my collection on a dresser as its a decent size collection now. Indeed im full on that so i need to find another cabinet to store them on. I always get rid of the box and get the bottles on show. Nothing like seeing a bottle & its label to make you want to drink it!

My parents have a walnut alcohol cabinet in their lounge, I've "made room" for my Johnnie Walker.

Keep all my spirits in a cupboard which is part of a sideboard unit... I'll keep whisky's in their tubes when they are nice looking and feel like worth keeping!

I have a glass upright cabinet which can hold anout 30 bottles on its four shelves. I think I purchased it from IKEA.

I store mine close to hand :P On it's side, in the tube, but remove them from the boxes, mainly because they won't fit on my wine rack. I tend to keep a few bottles on the go, so lying them flat stops the corks drying out. Especially important since they are in my living room, which is probably far to warm to keep whisky, but i don't really have anywhere else!

Cheap (and big! ) wine racks can be found here, which is where I got my 72 bottle monstrosity from! http://www.wineware.co.uk/

Good thinking on the corks front, though I'm not sure I could bring myself to ruin the beautifully manly look of a bottle of Scotch standing upright. Searching for something to add to the collection, I have realised that a really nice whisky in my collection, Tamdhu 18, which I bought for about ?30 (?8 off iirc), seems impossible to get hold of now, and where you can it's ?50+... Should have bought a few bottles!

I was going to suggest Dalmore Cigar Malt as they have now stopped producing it, but the price has skyrocketed to 90/bottle on TWE!
