Hi Michael..much as I like the 1/4 cask I find it too smokey & heavily peated for some of my milder cigars...

Well, I happen to ADORE the smoky peaty ones!! so that is indeed a caveat!

I have an extensive selection of whiskies and bourbons (and premium rums) at all price ranges and the QC can hold its own against bottles costing much much more in many ways.

its under ?30 if you include taxes, tithe and discounts

caol ila for a decent go-to dram though, its also bottled in a lot of supermarket blends.

unfortunately i dont have a bottle with any left in it to check if it goes with cigars.

Great dram indeed Seriesteve, and the older bottlings are even better, although at that price for the 12yo you cannot go wrong.

I'm a big fan of peaty/smoky whiskys, Lagavulin and Talisker being two of my favourite distilleries. When thinking about choosing something that would apeal to a broad spectrum of tastes though I'd avoid that as a lot of people don't like them.

I'd always give a beginner a Balvenie Double Wood, you really can't go wrong with it. I find it far superior to Glenmorangie 10/12yo or the Dufftown Singleton 12yo. For a smooth and flavorful whisky that's great with a cigar I'd have to go with Dalmore 12yo (or even better, the Gran Reserva) but I've only seen it in supermarkets once or twice and it would have to be on offer to get the 12yo below ?30.

Balvenie (suprisingly nice whisky for its cheapness, always a +)
Glenlivet (drank this on my Fathers' Fianc?e's 50th down in Oprington and i think the English had 2 halfs from 4 bottles of the 10yr :P)

Saying that the Superstition Jura is usually about ?30-?35 so dont know if you will count it.

i've saw this on offer in asda on ?20, keep your eyes peeled!!! incidentally, this is what i drunk when 'wetting my son's head' when he was born!!!

+1 for ...the Balvenie double wood, if you haven't tried it you must!

Plus Dalwhinnie 15 YO- has a great honeyed sweetness that pairs well with a smoke. Saw it in Tesco or Sainsbury in the last fortnight for under ?30*.

I haven't tried Glemorangie for ages as I recall it's quite dry - possibly too dry to match well - but it's quite light so I defer to those that have paired it.

lol, cheers!!! i only bought the jura superstition because i was attracted to the bottle, with the symbol of the ankh (egyptian symbol of life=birth of my first/ only child, it seemed symbolically appropiate), i've still got it!!! i take a wee nip every year on his birthday (07.07.07)!!

i don't think it's on offer at the moment though, but every few weeks either that or the original jura, the one with the triskele (the celtic triple spiral) goes on offer for ?20 or ?22, something like that!!!

First bottle of Jura i ever bought (empty now but still sits ontop of the kitchen cupbords, along with the Talisker and a few other misc bottles) was bought for ?17.something. If i remember correctly.
I dont think ill ever see that price again for a Bottle of such.
That was only 2 years ago or something. How the times move on eh ?

Yeah im attracted to the Jura bottles myself, something about them that just says:
''Look at me, open me,smell me, taste me, ENJOY ME !''

Hmmm, I'll maybe revisit it as it seems to be very popular with you guys but I really never rated Jura at all. I suppose that whiskys are the same as cigars though, one man's Ardbeg is another man's Cream of the Barley.

Saying that, the bottle of Talisker I bought i never enjoyed at all tbh, dont know why but i did not enjoy it.
However i revisited it a few months ago and rather enjoyed it.
Think its down to if you have went into it expecting something, then getting something totally different, you wont enjoy it. Probably something to do with not being able to enjoy what youve been given rather what youve been expecting.

I think that's an experience I've had a lot more with cigars than with whiskys, I think there are more variables involved. You read or watch a review and the flavour descriptions sound right up your street but due to a lack of age/bad year/bad storage/poor construction etc it just does not deliver like you are expecting it to.

Hmmm, wish I had some Ardbeg Corryvreckan on the shelf.
