  • Macallan 12

I've never tried any macallan. The entry level 12 is pretty pricey at around 65£. With the sherry finish around 90£

I was looking around some write ups and found this.
    https://marcasdewhisky.com/macallan-...e-cask-review/

Guess I'll have to try some then!

    Is either worth it?

This is a tough debate. Personally I love MacAllan. It’s got spice and warmth, but without the peat (I’m not a peated fan at all).

Buddies of mine hate it because they don’t like the spice and find it medicinal.

As much as I love it, I don’t reach for the bottle that often, mostly go for sweeter whiskey but it’s great as a treat once in a while.

Got to have the sherry finish.

Macallan for me is like the whisky equivalent of Cohiba, in that it is good quality but over hyped and there are plenty of other alternatives that are easily as good and far better value.

Ok. I'll definitely get some samples first. Thanks. Let's hope I like them less than Arran Bodega.....

Curious if you tried any Macallan yet ha_banos and if so what did you think?

I have to be honest I love Macallan, it's my favourite whisky. I really like the Macallan Rare Cask they do, also the Macallan Estate was great. Admittedly not as much of a fan of their 12 year old or similar ones but overall Macallan is my favourite when it comes to whisky.

Singleton is a close second and definitely more budget friendly.

                No!

Been working my way around Speyside and Springbank.

                Recent and current bottles:
                Arran QC
                Kilkerran 16
                Campbell Town Loch
                Springbank 10
                Benromach Cask Strength (with water!)
                Murray Mcdavid Linkwood 9
                Glenfarclas 15
                Dalmore 12 sherry
                Glenallachie 12

Also had a chance to try at recent tastings
Royal Braclka 12,18,21 (beyond the 12 didnt feel the others were an improvement)
Tomatin Italian collection (Barolo my fave)
Highland park 12,18 - i missed out on the cask strength!!!
                Glenfarclas 12,15,25,105cs
                Lakes
                Fettercairn
                Filey Bay

There's prob more but I cant remember

I must admit I like most of these but lean toward the more bold/in your face/cask strength tastes. But I think my fave at the moment is the Kilkerran 16 which might actually be less brutal!

No idea where the Rare Cask or Estate might fit in. Macallan is a huge range right? Might as well try something like the double cask? Or I'll find some samples or a bar to have a go. Intrigued...

I do actually have a Signatory Secret speyside 17 ('M' wink, wink) bottle, but not sure if I want to open or flip it later!

The Glenallachie 12 you mentioned is nice, so is the Glenallachie 15 finished both of these bottles with some cigars at CGars St James (multiple visits and I was with friends - just pointing that out before I get a bad rep )

Yeah Macallan is a big range and they have some great whiskies and admittedly some not so great whiskies.

That Rare Cask in ShaazK hand has more left in the bottle than mine. Very jealous! I only have a little bit left and I should finish it up but it's just one of those bottles I don't want to end. They normally bring a new Rare Cask bottle out each year for about £200-£300 but the price goes up quick on them.

Of course if you really want to splash out - https://www.harrods.com/en-gb/shoppi...-70cl-19703516

And if you want to go even further Sotheby's are doing an auction soon with some very rare and expensive Macallan.

Oof. Sad that will likely never get opened.

As a matter of principle I crack open the bottle as soon as they arrive. Make sure I never get tempted to get all stingy and not enjoy em

Been reading through some review of the Mac 12 double cask. None inspire me to try a bottle at £65 (min.) Will have to try some different Mac's just to see what all the fuss is about. But in absolutely no rush.

Would rather look at something like this https://www.tyndrumwhisky.com/linkwo...series-23.html I'm really liking the Murray McDavid Linkwood 9 mcdee pointed me at. This might be similar? At £48 might just give this bottler a punt!

So finally popped my Macallan cherry last night on the sherry oak 12.

Very sweet, quite smooth, touch spice. Easy drinking. The finish in the glass is also a very sweet smelling residue.

I guess people like it because of that sweetness? But too much I thought.

Don't think I'd get a bottle of that. But glad I tried it!

Caveat ... I realise things don't taste the same half way through a Lusitania as they otherwise might.
