  • The last British navy rum - ?600 a bottle!

Explore the four delicious rums of the Black Tot range – the flavourful Black Tot Finest Caribbean, the intense Black Tot Rare Old 40 Years, the elegant Black Tot 50th Anniversary Edition and of course, the legendary Black Tot Last Consignment Royal Navy Rum.

Released today to mark the anniversary of the end of the official rum ration on 31 July 1970. You need a commodores pay to afford it though at ?600 a bottle though - and when you consider you can get 30 bottles of the very nice Havana Club Anejo 7 year old Cuban rum for the same money it doesn't really appeal to me.

Makes me wonder what my late dad would have made of it though given he served in the navy between 1944-47 and had his daily ration and to the best of my knowledge never had a tot of rum again after demob (liked his whisky though!)...

I was in the Royal Navy when the Queen ordered splice the main brace in 2002 and an issue of rum was issued. It was cask strength and diluted for consumption. Very very nice rum. The Royal Navy issued a tot of rum per day to every sailor and if you could function after that no wonder we ruled the seas lol. Wouldn't pay ?600 a bottle as there are some very nice rums that are a lot better and a lot cheaper. Most shore based Wardrooms still have reserve stock hidden in cellars brought out for special Mess dinners. Potent stuff.

I'm a little put off their website - with references to 'celebrating' the end of the rum ration.

        It's nothing to celebrate!

          Agreed, a great travesty!

I'd love a try of this but although its aged your essentially paying ?600 for an every day sailors rum.

I believe the last bottle was bought by a sailor called Smackhead Jack. Not seen since.
