Calvados...it's not bad. It's a cheap bottle from Tesco that I'll not be bothering with again though. I think I'll stick to the Janneau Armagnac they sell in Asda from now on!

Ahh, I really love calvados, but always find it stupidly expensive in this country - on par with a reasonably good grape brandy usually, wheras normally in France you see bottles of the stuff selling for buttons. Asda's brandy XO is always good I find and only costs a tenner, so a lot less than most of the calvados you see for sale, but of the same or actually better quality..."The socialism I believe in is everyone working for each other, everyone having a share of the rewards. I love a decent glass of cider and a calvados on a summers evening. Lovely.
Did it on sunday evening with a PLpc.Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.Comment

Somewhere in the Southwest a guy who makes cider also does apple brandy. I saw it on a foody programe but can't remember the details.Comment

Possibly Hereford Cider Brandy from the King Offa Distillery? What a waste - the stuff must be one of my all-time favourite drinks, really far too good to swig from a plastic bottle when already several sheets to the wind. What little I had left went very well with cigars over a few nights at home. I think Selfridges had seriously mis-priced it as I only paid ?23 and I now see it's over ?30 bought direct (Selfridges no longer sell it).
I'm not a huge brandy aficionado, don't mind the odd drop of XO, but the cider stuff is something else - all the smoothness & complexity of cognac (well most of) but with a fantastic intense apple after taste that lasts & lasts. Knocks spots off any Calvados I've tried (although I've only had a couple of examples, all in this country).
If I ever find it in a shop again with a spare pair of Adam Smiths about my person, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another bottle of the 10yo or 15 yo. I suspect the 3 or 5 yo might be a bit too unrefined for those used to the french stuff.Comment

Calvados - very nice. My wife makes a lovely apple sorbet which goes very well with Calvados on top!
But....today I have mostly been drinking white wine.Comment
