Beer with cigars

Now that the weather is getting warmer in the UK (or at least the sun is shining) I find myself moving from the warming spirits of winter to beers and ciders of summer. I wasn't into cigars last summer and just wondered if anyone has any suggestions for a nice niche beer or cider to accompany a fine cigar or two on a warm summer?s day. I'm particularly into organic cider at the moment from the New Forest but I?m thinking the fruity kick might overwhelm the delicate flavours of a mild cigar.

I don't know what organic New Forest cider is like .... but find very, dry cider to be OK with a cigar.

New forest organic cider is just cider how it is supposed to be made, much more flavour and kick that the commerical Magners and Bulmers types. I think i might have a bottle of dry or extra dry cider around so i might start with that.

What type of cigars do you have with your cider?

Good hoppy IPAs tend to work quite well with cigars I find. Some of the best with a cigar, in my opinion, are Sharp's Doom Bar, St Austell's Tribute and St Austell's Proper Job.

A good mild is a nice accompaniment too, with it's slight malty sweetness it can happily take the place of coke mixers. A couple of my favourite milds are Churchend Gravediggers and Summerskills Barley Mow.

I think 'pace' is one of the nicer aspects of Ales. On warm Summer evenings I prefer to drink them slower than say lagers or cider, which somehow makes them more convivial to cigars.

Not a big fan of beer TBH. I much prefer spirits, although I do like Magners and a cigar on a summers day. Bliss.

cant go wrong with a nice dunkelweissen, weihenstephann, paulaner, edelweiss on a very sunny day. yum yum yum

that actually reminds me of a bacon smoked german beer i tried once.
overpoweringly strong taste of bacon. made me want to wretch... but maybe a good hair of the dog, cutting out the need for a fry-up

Jennings is my favourite brewery! I'm sure I've previously posted this pic of me pulling pints at the brewery, but will do so again... (Apologies for the sinister grin... )



Cumberland Ale has to be the best beer that there is. Only to be drunk from a pump however - they changed the brew for the bottled version and it's nothing like the proper stuff (stronger, less flavour, fizzier - bloody supermarkets )... I also love Sneck Lifter, what a great winter beer, I've got a couple of packs at home . The Dark Mild is a great mild, but I've never seen it outside of a Jennings pub... Another of my favourites is Golden Host, previously an April guest ale, it proved so popular that they have now started producing it more regularly (as an Organic beer, I'm interested to taste the difference, it's on at the local, so will be giving it a try tonight ).

Anyway, enough of the Jennings love-in.

as a massive real ale fanatic i could probably give you quite a list but a little advice i could give as im not sure you have a morrisions as a local supermarket, nothing beats the draught pumps, but as a supermarket in my neck of the woods they do a cracking range of real ales, german and belgium beers and have recently started to give a short brief profile on every beer on the shelf so before you buy you get an idea of what your buying as opposed to what the bottle says.
