  • White wine

I enjoy a red wine with my cigar on a Friday night. My personnal favourites being a Rioja or a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon.

But can anyone recommend a white wine to acompany a stogie?

I've had some mixed experiences with white wine & cigars - someone once told me it was the sulphites in the wine causing an adverse reaction with smoke on the taste buds, but I'm not sure as red wine also contains sulphites (although that could be explained by the tanins & generally stronger tastes masking the sulphur).

I think it might be the acid/astringent character of (some) whites which doesn't mix with smoke, thus I would suggest softer, more rounded wines*, eg Chardonnay over Sauvignon Blanc, New World over French, fruity/medium over dry etc. One of my favourite every-day glugging whites (Sainsburys Cotes De Gascoigne) for example does NOT go well with a cigar.

Sweet/desert wines can be a superb choice and I've often enjoyed a nice off-dry German with a smoke (although they can be quite sulphorous so you have to be careful). One of my all-time favorite smoke matches is a (relatively dry) Madeira such as Verdehllo or Sercial, but I can no longer find these ( or at least affordable versions) in my local Waitrose or wine shop.

[*Thinking about it - these guidlines also work in matchiing reds with cigars]

hi gordon i too for quite some time now have enjoyed a chilean cab sav with my smoke but recently started to experiment with white wine and cigars to mixed results to date for my taste the best combination ive found was pairing a german riesling (loosen bros 2008 mosel) picked up relatively cheaply and paired with with a hoyo epicure 2 both the wine and cigar paired very well together

I really enjoy german reislings. It has to be my favourite white. I have not yet paired it with a cigar, but will have to give it a try.

To be honest I've been a bit sceptical about matching the two, so thought I'd see if anyone had gave it go before I ruin either a good cigar, a good bottle of white, or both.

But it sounds lke the Reisling might be worth a try.

Dessert wines are great with stroner cigars, I personally like Banyuls or Tokaji, even a good Sauternes goes well with a Bolivar

Well, I tried the pairing tonight! I have to say it was pretty good. It may not be for everyone though.

Monty Especiales No.2 and New World whites go pretty well together. But if you don't want to risk it, try matching an 'earthier' tasteing cigar with dry cider, it works for me!
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

I agree Jdawg may not be for everyones taste but i enjoyed it. though i must say it seems only to work with mild medium strength cigars never tried it with fuller strength of say bolivar or partagas i just might give it a try you never know.

I've found that white wines can be a little acidic when mixed with smoking and even sting the tongue a little. The fuller bodied reds and desert wines may be fine, as well as fortified wines but the whites can be a little more difficult to match I think.

I partially agree with jdawg, Riesling wine can be most excellent but I quite easily tire of it after a while so I drink it only occasionally...or a lot if I happen to be in Germany

I hear a French Montrachet is suppose to be good - but I don't have a spare ?40 min. to buy a bottle to try out...

I quite like cabernet with a medium strength cigar, i think they balance each other out just nicely.
