that tonight with either a Monte Purito or maybe a Ten Little Indians Maduro, nothing that's going to last too long or be wasted. An' that untill Spring will be about the size of it, or at least till me Por Larra?aga Panetelas turn up!

I never threw up so much in my life!

No, no Mr Nicwig, grappa, but good grappa, is delicious.

Still I would never have more than one... or two a skinful plus six you say

I'm with Nic...Grappa is vile. Got smashed whilst skiing in Pila a few years ago and ended up on Grappa. It's the most vile drink I've come across.

I had some coffee grappa free after a meal in Barcelona. I've been keeping my eye out for a bottle ever since.

[EDIT] Looks like it might have been grappa IN coffee from the wikipedia page? That makes it easier!

I'll have to take up the task of defending the Italian pride on this one

There's loads of bad grappa out there, and a lot of the stuff that makes its way accross the Channel is indeed vile, but a good cask aged grappa or a fine single-cultivar one can be a work of distiller's art. If you want to try a reliable brand look for Nonino, which is quite decent.

Still grappa is a drink to be savoured in small amounts and not a drink to get smashed on, as it will give the worse headache ever (in my experience only paired by the headache you get after a night drinking Tequila shots ).

... having said that, my drinks shelf has one grappa and 8 single malts

I have to agree with Maledetto. Had some Nonino and Sassacaia Grappa while visiting family in Italy, amazing. I've never had such smooth and balanced grappas. Brought back 2 bottles of each, all gone.
P.S. Stay away from the homemade stuff !!!

I'm afraid if we are looking for a drink that sums up the Valle d'Aosta (which, I appreciate, we are not), then it has to be Genepy - a fantasticly alcoholic drink. The best are those which you can persuad locals to serve to you which they have made themselves using illegally harvested alpine plants...

ChrisMClark - this is my recommendation if you find yourself in Pila again. I have been extremely heavily dosed with the stuff all along the Aosta Valley, from Aosta to Courmayeur via Pila... Oh, and all the way from Courmayeur to Calais. (A whole bottle of the stuff in one evening is not recommended, especially on a coach...)
