The standard 10 year is good too, certainly packs a smokey, medicinal, slightly sweet punch!

Hey Tony, I have to agree with K444HEP...... if you can, for an extra few quid, go for the Uigeadail instead of the 10yr old standard bottling! Saying that, Laphroig is hard to beat and is normally on offer in Tesco and Asda for around half the price of Ardbeg...... at least it is here in Belfast.....

Ardbeg 10 is a great whisky, maybe not the best to approach the world of peated malts due to its aggressive character. The above mentioned Laphroig 10 is definitely easier to start with.
On the nose the peat and iodine are dominant, some vanilla notes here and there but peat, peat and again peat.I like to have some other whisky before jumping into strongly peated malts like Ardbeg, Laphroig or Octomore - one of my best picks to 'calibrate my palate' is the black label.
Very robust&gentle on the mouth, typical to Islay malt, very smoky and sweet. I find some citric notes and vanilla in the background - the finish is long-lasting.
If you aren't into smokey whiskys I'd suggest starting with a Caol Ila 12 or Laphroig 10
