  • Redbreast 12 yr old

As it's Christmas, I thought I'd give a decent whisky a try with a cigar (I am a whisky novice). I'd read about the Redbreast 12 year old on here and have ordered a bottle.

A couple of questions -what would be a good cigar to combine with this to, hopefully, bring out the best in both (type/ strengths/ specific Marques/ specific cigars even? - I've got a reasonable collection of CCs in particular now, so bang some names out and it may be I've got something).

Also, what's the best way to drink it? Neat/water/ice? I read somewhere that just a drop or two can be all that's needed sometimes (I've got a pipette ready (!), so how many drops?)

    Thanks

    Disclaimer: I too a a whiskey novice.

I had a bottle of the Red Breast last Christmas - didn't last long once my father in law had tried it!

A Lovely drop on its own or with 2-3 drops of water. Try it both ways Chris and see what pleases your palate most. I always find added water opens up entirely different aspects of whiskey. (I also know that some people look done on those that add water but to each his own.)

As for smokes, well I've just had some neat Green Spot (another Irish whiskey) with one of the COTM and they went together very well. I found the cigar quite strong to start with and they worked really well together, really noticed the sweeter notes of the whiskey.

There's probably some science behind all this that I'm unaware of but it tasted damn fine so I'm currently living in blissful ignorance!

I'd be interested to hear your experience and what you enjoyed.

As your a 'novice' may I suggest a nice cold beer along side just to cleanse or cool the pallete if you find it too harsh or strong at first.

From what I remember redbreast was a lovely whisky.. fruity and sweet. I'd say add a few drop of water if you're getting in to whisky as some people think it's a bit harsh...however with Irish whisky you'll find they are smoother compared to a scotch.

Not really pair different cigars with different whisky's so can't help you on that one..like Marc said the green spot is another good Irish whisky one which was a big hit in my advent calendar a few years back.

If you said earlier in the month could have made a little sample pack for you have over Xmas. Pm in the new year might be able to send you some if I got the time before the little one makes a appearance. (Hoping not this year [emoji85])
