as close to neat as I can, but with the addition of not more than a few drops of water. I dip a finger into a glass of water and drip a few drops into the glass. Just enough to open up the nose a bit... I thought it was someone being a bit wanky at first... and then found the benefits of a few drops of water were actually very real and very good"Dear heart, you're talking to a man- a real man- who drinks straight Tequilla, with lime and salt on the rim, and smokes cigars" (J Zavala)

I used to be happy to drink it neat or with the minimum of water but these days my stomach dictates I add a fair bit so I tend to stick to Jamiesons, if fine & there's no point watering the good/expensive stuff too much! Of course there are exceptional days when I go for my single malts but I usually have to add evening Gaviscon to my morning omeprazole, of the joys of the aging process.Simon Bolivar: Liberator of Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru & Venezuela.

I did a tour of the Bushmills distillery a few years back and the recommendation was to drink it with a few drops of water - the water helps release the oils and improves the taste. If you've not tried it, you can watch the oils swirl in the glass as you add a couple of drops of water. All this talk of whiskey is making me thirsty!

I was at an event at the Scottish Malts Whisky Society in London a few months ago. They did a four dram tasting, and really talked you through the process of how and when you might add water. It was really interesting and really opened my eyes to decent single malt scotch.
I did get a strange look the other week, when having ordered a couple of large Lagavulin 16yr olds, I enquired as to whether they had a pipette to help the addition of water. I settled for a small jug instead.
