  • Rum for beginners

    Hey guys

My go to drink is normally a nice scotch...my collection consist a mixture of blends highland Islay And Speyside..surprising none from the lowlands.

However I'm looking at adding some rum to my collection but I have no clue where to start.

I'd prefer a rum that you can have straight or on the rock as I'm not a fan of mixers.

But I just don't know where to start...any help will be great.

    Cheers BOTL

The Havana club 7 anos is a good starting point for neat rum I also find the captain Morgan spiced rum a nice tipple

I could recommend 4 or 5 full bottles for you to buy but you're tastes may be very different to mine.

Have a look at Master of Malt and buy a rum tasting set, or even put you're own together.

Worst case scenario for less than the price of a bottle you've tried a variety of rums without committing to buying full bottles.

When I was in Cuba the guide told me that the locals don't drink Havana Club, they prefer Ron de Santiago

I would second Jerry's recommendation above. The 7 year Havana Club is good, and pretty reasonably priced.

The ideal solution would be to get some directly from the Caribbean. Not sure if you have any generous friends going there soon...

Cheer' guys....that havana club 7 was one rum I was looking at as it's on show on Sainsbury all the time recently.

To be fair I don't mind buying bottles as it will get drunk by someone.

I actually do have some of my wife friends who are going to Jamaica very soon...might be an idea get them to bring some.

I agree with PleNty Ron De Santiago is preferred by Cubans but it's not easy to find over here, well at least not in the leafy suburbs of North East London

This then! There's a lovely rum from St Martin that I think you can get all around the Caribbean called Rum Jumbie. I'd recommend that if your friends spot it

I'm no connoisseur but I can second the recommendation for Zacapa. Got given a bottle as wedding gift and it was absolutely smashing.

Worth reading up on rums as I believe some are artificially sweetened to round off the rough edges, though I'm happy to be corrected on this.

                              I have a bottle for making Cuba Libre's and Dark 'n' Stormy's.

As PJ says, OK with mixers.
