I love homebrewing but only manage 3-4 brews a year mostly due to space issues. Hoping to move to extract brewing when we get a bigger place but sticking to kits since then. Particularly enjoying Woodforde's kits and messing about modifying cheap as chips Wilco kits, usually for the better.

Woodfords are very good kits and the best way to improve the Wilco kits IMO is to either double up on them or use a tin of liquid malt extract rather than Brewers sugar.

Been mostly playing with the stout, tin of treacle and kilo of spray malt. Nice drop and decent body but head holding badly.

Two cans for a tenner so had plenty to play with. Wilco's irregular home brewing sales are a great source of cheap basics. And Woodforde kits if there are any left.

Have a look at the Bull Dog Evil IPA kits, they taste great and are strong as fook.

I have gone down the spray malt beer enhancer route too, I was a cigarette smoker at the the time so really didn't notice the difference, I balame it on the ciggies. I do like muntons though, you really can't go wrong with them, milestone is another that is a really good tasting beer, I have tried their actual beer in bottles and the kits are very similar. I have two barrels on the go usually for the 40 pint kits and bottle the Brewferm kits, these are really good Belgian abbey style beers that are usually 9 litres and above, on the plus side some of them are around 8% so just a couple of bottles at a time.

So, for the uninitiated, what would be a basic set of equipment that is required before thinking about brewing. I could see myself possibly dipping into a kit of sorts for example.

You would be pretty much set to do extract brewing with this and could dabble with small all grain batches if you got a big stock pan and a muslin bag.

Brewferm kits are excellent. I brewed up their Grand Cru with golden syrup as the brewing sugar and gave it away as favours at my wedding. Lovely drop and really benefits from a longer bottle condition.

I've always got by without one but moving on to more advanced brewing its going to be essential.
